MONDAY EVENING, AUGUST i. Shot Her Assailant.?The Misses Alice and Sarah Champlain, about forty years old, ? run a farm between Utica nnd Whitesboro, N. Y. For nearly seven years David H. Jones, aged thirty-five, has been employed by them and proved very steady and faith* ful until recently, when be began to drink. The women consulted their neighbors about the change in the man's habits and were ad vised to diecharge him. This they hesitated about doing, fearing that he would, out of revenge, set lire to some ol the farm build? ings. About 9:30 o'clock yesterday eveniDg Mips Alice returned home from an errand, and found her sister absent. Bhortly after? wards she heard a scuille in the hack yard and on going out found Jones attempting to aHsault Sarah. Alice struck him over the head with her parasol, and finally with a hoard. Jones, who was intoxicated, left Sarah and chased Alice into the house, where he caught her, and threw her upon a sofa, under the pillow cf which a revolver was kept. Alice, being almost overpower? ed, reached for the weapon and shot her as sailant in the left breast near the heart. Physicians say the wound is not necessarily fatal. Miss Champlain is at ber home in charge of a deputy eherill. She ra greatly prostrated. Dr. Tierce's "Favorite Prescription" ptr fectly and permanently cures those diseases peculiar to females. It is always welcomed in tho household, while ir. the couuling room and workshop if bus uocoiih invaluable. Tho Gazette has better facilities i<o <,t. taining news than any paper outside of I h< national capital. Situated as it i-1 bo do i to the great centre of news, it enjoys daily tho benefit of the Associated Press din patches from every part of t he world ; hence iLs patrons can read from its columns in the evening what has transpired that, day in every portion of nur own domain ns well as from every part of tho habitable j;loi?e. Consequently it. is an every day occurrence for the gazette to publish telegrams from the various European capitals twelve nod fifteen hours earlier than the morning pa? pers. Another feature that serves to make the gazette h great desideratum witb mer? chants is its afternoon market reports from Now York, Baltimore, Chicago and other centres. ? Tho local department furnishes a full and complete history of everything that occur? n and near the city, and this feature will, as ever, receive careful attention. Correspondence from Washington, Rich mond and every section of theSlate, is pub? lished regularly, and all events of interest occurring within the hounds of the Com? monwealth are to bo found in the columns of t he Gazette. Tho Gazette's circulation is steadily in creasing, especialby among pc-oplo who con? sult its advertising columns before purchas? ing. That this is self-evident may be infer? red from the fact that a largo country edi? tion?nearly as large as the daily?is sent all over this section of country three times a week, and ia read by thousand?, most, of whom send here or to contiguous cities to make purchases.
