It \:\ not very often that the people of the Western frontier country uro taken in by swindlers, but when they are they go in all over. The great real estato booms in tho eastern part of the State have had their ef? fect upon the settler?, and almost every mat) who owns a piece of land feels that it is worth a good deal more to-day than it was six weeks ago. At first tho reports from the East were received with a mild sort of satisfaction, and a confidence that what was going ou :n Wichita would soon bo repeated hero ou the western line of the Stute. No one thought it would come im? mediately, but all believed that it would come, So there was a geuoral stiffening of prices and a patient determination to wait and see what tho future would bring forth. The people of Greeleyville, Kan., were in this frame of mind when several well dress? ed strangers arrived in town about two weeks ago and began to inquire about the value of certain real estate. Xothiug seri? ous was suspected at first, but in the course nf a few days it was seen that they meant business. Jim Boues's farm, south of town, which might have been had a month ago for $200, was sold to tho strangers for $1,500 and they paid ??OO of it down. Prices went up right away, und when Jim tried to buy another place he found that he couldn't reach anything within ten miles of the jail uuless he borrowed money. Tho day after the sale the strangers an? nounced that they had discovered natural gas on the Bones place, and, sure enough, that night the skies in that direction were brilliantly illuminated. Tho entire popula? tion turned our. to see the sieht. Just back of the shed which Jim had used as a barn wa.s an iron pipe, and from tho nozzle of it there issued a llaring and spluttering llame. Everybody stood speechless except Jim, who raved aud swore, &od tried to pick a fight with one of the visitors. Other citi? zens interfered at this point, and a disturb? ance was prevented. "You see," said one o( the strangers, "wo are natural-gas exports from Pennsylvania. We have been following this vein all the way from Uniontowu. Some chaps from Pittsburgh got in ahead of us at a poiut in Ohio where we looked for it, and tho same way down near Torre Haute, Ind. When we located it there, we found that we were on some property that belonged to a minor heir, and we could not get possession. Then wo set out for the West, for wo know that it would reappear eomewhere out here. There were symptoms in Missouri, and better prospects yet at Lamed, but this is more like it. The thing don't work just right yet, though. We will have to go down further. Some of these wells are live mile? deep. You can imagine what is down below you hero when I tell you that this vein has been topped at a depth of only forty feet. I haven't any doubt that at a fair depth you cau Had gas enough hero to illuminate the continent." The next day tho strangers called a town meeting and announced their intention of organizing a stock company for the purpose j of developing the vetD. They had many other enterprises on hand, and as they would be away much of tho time they would like to have some interested parties ou the ground. They would waut a superintend? ent at a uood salary, and they would have to have nn office where they could mature plans to distribute the gas all over Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado. Mr. Ken yon, the banker, was elected superintendent at a salary of $2,000 a j car, and a fine room iu his building was rented as au office. It was in this place that the stock was sub scribed for. The terms were made easy enough to suit almost anybody. The capi? tal stock was to be $100,000, mid any man or woraau who put up ten per cent, was en? titled to what was wanted. Even the preacher came in for a thousaud dollars, his parishioners putting up the margin for him, on the ground that when the Lord's bounty had been liberally bestowed upon tho town it would not be right to permit His chief ei van* to suffer through his poverty. The ?'linker also advanced considerable money for the weak Eisters who had no ready money, taking mortgages on their furros or ^tock. In this way $49,000 worth of stock was taken in one day. The discoverers pos? itively refused to sell more than this, as they '?aid they always made it a point to retain a jntrolling interest in all property that they developed. This appeared reasonable, and no complaints were made. A few days later the strangers announced that they would start for the East last Sat? urday for the purpose of securing tho proper machinery. Before they left they gave sev? eral exhibitions of the power of the gas, gen? erally at night. They had a stop ou the Pipe, and when that was opened and a match applied the flame blow up about two 'set and gave the greatest satisfaction. A watchman was hired to guard the well, and w'ien the gentlemen came to leave a com? mittee of citizens escorted them to lhe railroad and wished them a suc "'?8ful trip and a speedy return. Sunday l!1e entire town visited the well and many attempt-to experiment with it were made. Lum Huddleston, the watchman, warned the crowd away repeatedly, and at length was constrained to strike a man who Persisted in meddling with the stopcock. - be follow was from the northern part oi the county, and he had been in the habit ?> doing about as he wanted to. When '?iia hlt aim, therefore, he hit back, and Wore anybody could stop it there was a "gat, m the course of which Lum was ! thrown heavily against the pipe, and the ; whole thing came up by the roots. About four feet under the surface, and attached to : the upright pipe, was a gasoline reservoir, 1 and that was all. The panic tbat fell on the town was in ; desoribable. Every face blanched. Some j one said in the presence of the preacher i that it was nothing but a d-d cook ? stove, and he was not rebuked for the ut? terance. The bauker went back to his of Jice and put up a card announcing tbat he had suspended for ten days in order to examine his books. The farmers who mort? gaged their farm3 to him held a meeting and agreed that if he took i\ step toward fore? closure they would kill him. Tbat is the way matters stand now. It is said that the sharpers wore Denver bunco men.?Model Farmer. It AMonished the 1'nolir. to hear of the resignation of Dr. Pierce as a Congressman to devote himself solely to his labors us a physician. It was because his true constituents were the sick und a?leted I everywhere. They will find Dr. Pierce's ! "Golden Medical Discovery" h. beneficent use of his scientific knowledge in their be? half.
