53 FRIDAY EVENING. SEPTEMBER 2. Wouldn't Marry Among the Heathen. ?An amusing rcene occurred at the Mary land Steamboat Company's wharf at Saiis bury, Md., Wednesday. About fourteen months ago Mrs. Cordela Geare, of Balti? more, advertised in the Hear! and Hand, published at Chicago, for a husband. Mr. George W. Fooks, a gentleman living near Salisbury, saw the advertisement and an? swered it, and from that time a correspond? ence has been kept up, resulting finally in an engagement to marry. The marriage was arranged to take place in Salisbury. A short wbiic ago Mrs. Geare wrote to Air. Pooka ihat she might be expected at Sails bury. She was ta'Kon Fick in the meantime and informed her a ilia need that she could not come. Wednesday however, she ar? rived at Salisbury on the steamer Pratt. Mr. Fooks was not at tho wharf to meet her. She was interviewed by several parties, and after it was learned in what difficulty dbe found herself a courier was dispatched for Mr. FookBj who soon arrived in his matri monial garb. By this time over a hundred people were on the wharf, and everybody who knew the would-be groom contratu lated bivn and received hearty thanks in ie torn. In the saloon the lovers mot for tho first time. After a short talk Mrs. Geare said that there were so many people on the wharf who acted so much like heathen that she would not live in Salisbury for any con sidoration, but if Mr. Fooks would go to Baltimore and live she would marry him. Mr. Fooks then came out and announced to his friends that tho marriage wus off for tho present. Mrs. Geare returned to Baltimore on the boat. She is about G? jeara old, ami a widow. Mr. Fooks i3 about 45 year? o;d, and a widower. TbeAIornlDC WresM. It is said that a lady's standing in society can easily be determined by her dress at the breakfast-table; an expensive, showy costume indicating that the wearer has not yet learned the proprieties. But no one need be afraid of being called "shoddy*' il ber loveliuees i3 as apparent by daylight as at tho bops. Perfect beauty is never tbe at? tendant of disease ; above all, of those dis? ease peculiar to women, and which find u ready cure in Dr. Pierce'e "Favorite Pre? scription." Price reduced to one dollar. By druggists. ADVICE TO MOTHERS.
