Hanged an<l Still Alive.
Yesterday afternoon a colored man was
taken ill on iho Common and would have
fallen but fur the timely assistance of two
hystandeis. Tho man hail been waudering
about the Common since morning, and
had been noticed on aceouut of the peculiar
way in which he carried his head. It himg
toward his: right shoulder and he seemed to
to take no pains to pull it into tho position
iu which people commonly carry their
beads. He was. respectably dressed in
clothes that had evidently not been made
for him, and his boots looked as if he hud
walked b considerable distance. When he
bud been assisted to u, seat he fainted, and
when he regained consciousness he clutched
at his throat, tore away 1?3 collar and eaid
appealingly: "No, no! My God ! Not
again !" His embarrassment when he look?
ed about him was marked. One of the gen?
tlemen who had assisted him to a seat left
when the colored man had recovered, but
the other remained and questioned him as
soon as he had regained his composure.
It was sitting in tho Common after he
bad dined that he said : "I have had trou
ble with my neck and been subject to faint
inn spells sinco I was hanged in Arkansas."
The expression was startling enough to
make any ono tniiik iuu man Ci?ZJ ;
but he was circumstantial as to details of
timo and place, and it is a well-known fact
that D negro was legally hanged three years
ago in Arkansas for assault, on a white wom?
an, and afterward recovered conscioitSDes.'-.
As published theu, the negro was suspended
fur twenty minutes after the drop of the old
fashioned gallows fell, and the body wa3
given by the SheriLV to tho fatberofthe
young man, who, with some friends, was
waiting near by with a wagon, It was the
intention to take him to the settlement where
he formerly lived and bury him there. This
settlement was fourteen miles from the
county seat, at which the hanging took
place, and was through a lonely, piece of
country.
When the wagon was nearly at home the
father of the supposed corpse and his friends
wero startled by groans comiog from under
the tarpaulin thrown over the supposed dead
man, and his struggles to got from under it.
As soon as they had recovered from their
fright they went back to the wagon from
which they had fled and helped the legally
dead man up, pave him a drink from the
omnipresent jug of whiskey and took him
home. Iustead of leaving the settlement at
once the hanged man stayed around his old
home, and tho superstitious colored people
demanded his rearrest and the completion of
the banging. The case was taken to
the Governor, and pending discussion
as to the riebt of the authorities to
take cognizance of the existence of a
convict who had been pronounced legal?
ly dead, the man lied and has been a wan?
derer ever eiuco. It was only after repeated
urging, sweetened with promise of help to
leave the city in comfort, that he told his
story in the dialect of a Southern field hand,
somewhat, tempered by residence in the
North. Diveeted of it3 quaint dialect his
tale is weirdly interesting.
"I was locked up," ho said, "more thau
six months, but I never thought I was going
to bo banged until the night before. Then
1 knew t ho gallows was up and I got scared.
They prayed with me all the time and tried
to keep me from thinking of it, but I didn't
hear what they prayed about. I was too
excited. I didn't go to sleep all the night
before, and when they came to fetch me I
wa9 so weak I couldn't stacd up. The
Sheriff gave me a drink of whiskey, and
then they tied my elbows behind my back
and took mo along. I know there were
crowds around when I went to the gal
iows, but I didn't seem to see 'em. I heard
somebody singing, and I joined in. Then
they pushed me up on the gallows, and I
aw the rope and got scared again and tried
to hang back, but they pushed me along and
made me stand up straight. I recollect
their putting the noose on my ne'ik and
drawing it tip tight, but I was thinking of
whether they were going to hurt me, and
all at once [ dropped. I had shut my eyea
when they pulled a piece of cloth over my
face, but I opeued them then and tried to get
my hands up to tear tho cloth off so I could
see ; but all at once I thought some ono hit
me a terrible blow on the head, and I lost my
senses. When I woke up I thought some
oue was choking me, and I tried to get
loose, but I couldn't. Then it seemed ns if
my bead wa3 bursting, and I saw awful
lights before my eyes, and my feet and
hands seemed to bo so heavy I couldn't stir
them. Then great rings of all sorts of
bright colors began at my eyes and went
further and further off, growing bigger and
fainter until I lost them. My head felt
prickly all over, and so did my hands and
feet, and I couldn't breathe, and then I
fainted. Once I knew I was beiDg hanged,
but it was only for a second.
"When I woke up in the wagon I was
worse scared than before, and when I got
out from under tho tarpaulin I thought I
had been dreaming. Then, when my neck |
got to burning me so, I knew what was the
matten For weeks afterward I could hard- !
iy swallow, aud I couldn't turn ray head,!
and I can't now very much. Tho cotds arc
all stiffon one side and drawn down. I can
never go home again, and I can never see '
or hear of my folks again. They were going I
to catch me and do it all over again, so I i
ran away. I've been knocking around ever
since, principally in Canada, New Jersey, i
New York and Pennsylvania, but now I j
thought I'd come up here where I might
get some light work I could do. Sometimes
I have wished that I had never come to life
again. That's been when I've been nearly
fro/.in and starved. I never go near color?
ed people, for it whs iny own coior that tried
to nave me hanged over, and I hate a black
face."? Worcester Telegram.

The capital stock of this, company is $G25.000, divided into G25.000
shares of $1 each.
The company is incorporated under the laws of West Virginia, and
the stock is non-assessable, und carries with it no personal liability to
the holder.
TnE Gold Mining Company (location. Music Mountains, A. T,) is as
sound a mining enterprise as was ever placed on the market, and its
possibilities have never been exceeded. Every share should double in
value within a year, and they may quadruple, as they are based on
property that would ordinarily have been capitalized ten (10) times as
great on account of its known richness and promise.
The shares are made small so that any one can invest. Subscriptions
for five shares are as welcome as those for hundreds.
Every dollar of earnings will go to the stockholders in dividends, as
there is nothing else that they can be used for.
A Wisewell mill, capacity 20 tons per day, with powerful machinery,
has been purchased and will be on tlie ground ready for erection at the
mine within the next, thirty days.
The solid basis upon which the company is founded and the practical
proofs of the richness of the mine have already secured the confidence
of the public, and the stock has steadily advanced in selling value.
Within the last few days bona fide sales have been made at par.
There is no better stock on the market for a permanent investment.
