there may come a time in the progress
of any disease when it can't be stopped.
That's what we mean when we talk of
"galloping consumption." It's like a

Strength will stop the wildest horse.
Strength is the great necessity in the

BKYAN'S KISE 10 POWER
However closely the American people
have watched the rise from obscurity to
prominence of Wild ???? J. iiuin^H Bryan,
they have, at? a usti?n, known bim only
since tbe day, four yearn ago, when he
walked, unnoticed, to the speaker'*
platform in tbe Chicago cou venllon, and
wiiniu mi unir became, {?erhaps, tbe
most striking figure lu American politics
of h decade.
Wbat be has dono since that hour tbe
world knows. What be dui before Is
told by his most faithful co-worker, bis
wife, in the following sketch:
William Jennings Brvan was born in
S .lem, III., March IU, i860, lie was a
sturdy, round-limbed boy and fond of
play. His appttite, which has since
neen a constant companion, developed
very early. The packets of bis first
trousers were always filled with bread,
which he kept for an emergency.
Wtien a boy, it was his ambition to be
a minister, but this gave place to a de?
termination to become a lawyer, "like
father."
His boyhood was passed on a farm
and bis mother taught bim until be was
ten years old. After committing bis
lessons to memory be stood upon a lit?
tle table and spoke them to his mother.
This was his tiret recorded ell ?rt at
speech-making.
He then entered the public schools at
Sull'in, and during bis five years' at?
tendance was not an especially brilliant
pupil, though he never iailed in an ex?
amination.
His father's Congressional campaign,
io 1872, was his first political awakeu
ing, and from that time on he always
cherished the thought of enteiing pub
lie life.
At 15 he entered the preparatory de?
partment of Illinois College, at Jackson?
ville, 111., and with this step a changed
life began. For eight yean- be led tbe
life of a student. He bad a t ' rong pref?
erence for mathematics, and especially
for geometry, and has believed that the
mental discipline acquired in his study
has doce been useful in arguments.
He was, too, an earnest student of
political economy. In bis sophomore
year he won his first prize with an es?
say oo "Labor." An oration upon "In?
dividual Powers," gave bim tbe first
prize in tbe junior year.
My personal knowledge of Mr. Bryan
dates from September, 1879, when I
first saw him in the parlors of the
Young Ladies' School, which I attend?
ed in Jacksonville. His notable fea?
tures were bis nose and mouth. Upon
one occasion a heartless observer was
beard to remark : "That m-in can
whisper in his own ear " But this was
cruel exaggeration.
William stood well in the law school,
taking an especial interest in constitu
tional law.
(?? July 4, 1883, Mr. Bryan began
toe practice o? bis profession in Jack?
sonville, 111., and in a little more than ?
year bis income seemed largo enough
to support two. During tbe summer
of 1884 a modest borne was planned
and built, and on October 1, 1884, we
were married.
In 1887 we moved to Lincoln. I
might here suggest an answer to ? hos?
tile criticism; namely, that Mr. Bryan
did uot distinguish himself as a lawyer.
Those who thus complain should con?
sider that he entered the pi act ice at 20
and left it at 80, and during that period
began twice and twice became more
tban s-lf-supporting.
Mr. Bryan became actively connected
with tbe democratic organ)/ ition in Ne?
braska immediately after coming to tbe
State.
In tbe congressional campaign of 1890
Mr. Bryan was -Ucted by a plurality ot
6,713.
Upon bis return to Nebraska be was
able to secure re-electiou in a new dis?
trict, the State having been reappor
tioned.
In tbe Fifty-third ( '.ingress Mr. Bryan
was reappointed upon the ways and
means committee and assisted in the
preparation of the Wilson bill.
His principal work of tbe term, bow
ever, was in connection with monetary
legislation.
Since then Mr. Bryan's daily?al?
most hourly?movements bave been
kept before tbe public by an untiring
press.
Tbough an advocate of an eight-hour
day, Mr. Bryan has during tbe left
thirteen years averaged nearly twelve
hours a day at professional and literary
work.
An Epidemic of Diarrhoea
Mr. A Sanders, writing from Cocoa
nut drove, Fla., ssys there has been
quite an epidemic of diarrhoea there.
He bad as. vere attack and was cured
by four doses of Chamberlain's Calte,
i-holera and Diarrhoea Remedy. He
says he also recommended it to others
and they say it ? the best medicine
they ever u*ed. For sale by all drug
giess.
A gentleman receutly coiod of dyapepeia
gave the io'lowing appropriate rendering of
Burn?'? famous blessm* : "dome have meat
