Mr. Crupper to Ketire.
The anoouncement that Mr. Joseph
_ Crupper, who lor the past HvN
years haa well and efliciently filied the
i>osition of poatmaster at Alexaudna,
will not a^ain be un applicant for that
place, will *>e a aurpriae to the cosaaaa
nity at large and will be regretted by hia
larie circle of irienda. Mr. Crupper's
?xcellent managemeul of tho otbce haa
moa for him the endoraement of practi
cally the entire busineas community
whkh would have urged hia reappoint
ment it he had again applied for the po
aition, but owing to other engagemeut*
be has decided to relinquish the poat
wastership at the end of his terin and
devote himselt to his rapidly increaaing
business in Washingtou, which now re
quirea almoat his entire attention. Mr.
C'rupner, it ia understood, ha3 for some
time past coutcmplated tbisstep but waa
prevailed upon by hia friends to wait untij
hia term of office expired. It is kaown
that the demaoda made upon him and
the many things axpected of him by the
rank and lile of the republican party in
this city, r.t which for aome time past be
has been the leader, have been dUtaste
ful to bim, so he haa decided to become
a private citizen, and having receutly re
aigned an cbairman of his party in Alex
andria he will rctire as postmaster at the
end of his term and, as above stated, de
vate his time aud talenta to his own pri
vai? businesa alfaira.
Tha .aeveral avowed candidate*, and
many otbers who will no douht tnter
thair naniesaacontestauts, will doubtless
be rejoiced to know that Mr. OfOppW
will not be a candidate for rosppoint
ment at the close of hU term which will
??xpire ?n April, 1906. Early in thia
year Mr. Crupper intimated to a lew
close friends that he was not sure that
he would agaiu be a candidate for po.-t
maater.becsuse, even if successful in be
ing named ior a third term, he was in
doubt as to the wiadoiu of accepting.
gince that time, or for tbe past montb,
Mr. Crupper aays he has hecome fully
convinced that iu a year or ao the Alex
aodria postoffice will require, andshould
receive, a cotisidfrable portion of the
personal aupervision of the poatmaater.
'fhe buainess of the oftice is expand
ing monthly, and aa Mr. Crupper's
private businesa alao requires a iair
amount of time and attention, he waa
not wllliog to alight tbe one or aacritice
the 'Jther; hcnce be has reached
his conclusions, and made his plans
after devoting much thought to the niat
ter. Mr. Crupper's determiuation not
10 be an applicantlorreappointment was
in no way influenced by Mr. Park Ag
new's resignation. Cloaeaa are the po
litical and parsonal relatioua of these
caojjentlemen, there is no "me too
Iwsioesa iuvolved. Several days ago
.Alr. Crupper aaid he would make knowo
iiis intentiooson Saturday (today) tbrough
tbe medium of the Gazette. This was^
befjre the contlictiug reporta as to tie
Preaideot's policv concerning oflicial
terms; ?o Mr. Crupper's determination
was not influenced by Mr. Agnew's restg
jnation on tbe one haod, or Poatmaater
General Cortelyou'a declaratioa after the
C'abinet meeti'ng yesterday "that poat
ttiaaters were notto be barred from fur
tVw service airnply becauae of eight
*?ars' aervice," on the other. Mr
tVupper, asstated above, will complete
bls tsvo terms of four years each in
April, I90b\ The otfice businesa has
greatl'y incmaaed during his t?rm. and
has been administered to tbe entire sat*
iafaction of every persou iu tbe city.
The scramble for tbe place with the
dalary of nearly $2,500 will now beg.u
in earnest.
The Collectorship.
The anoonncement in yesterday's
Gazette of tne determination of 1 reai
dent Roosevelt to appOint Mr. L. r.
Summers,ofAbingdon, to tbe poei ion
of Collector oflnternal Revenue for this
diatrict iu place ol Mr. Park Agnew,
while regretted by all Alexandnans,
waa not aurpri-Miig.'irorn tbe fact that it
was knowu that Col. Slemp had beeu
peraistently advocating hia candidacy
and urgintr lu* work in tbe mteresta of
the republicaj party during the late
preaidential campaign.
The President, however, had iotimated
that he had no diaposition to disturb
faithful otbeeholder* whe had honeetly
won their apurs in devotion to the
party's welfare, and thia had ahed a
iaint ray of hope into the caruj. ol those
who had pcfflaoaly been uneasy from
the fact that the executive had [>revi
?*usly observed that eiglit years' lervice
waa aufficient for government ofioa.
uolders. Theoutconie kaaahowi thedan
ger of relyiog upon intimatiooa coming
froau Mr. Kaosevelt, as his actioa in coo
nection with tbe poailiou of collector la
a fair sample of his capriciouaness.
When Mr Aguew was aeen this morn?
ing bv a represeutative of the Gazette,
he <oiild add but little to wbat has been
aaid ab.ive, save tbat he had no crilicisu:
whatever to make upon the action of the
President in deferring to Col. Slemp.
He also recognized the earnest labor ol
Mr. Summers for the welfare of the party.
Mr. Aguew aaid he had no complaint
to urge, he had ever been treated kindly
by ihe adminislration, and hia record
wa- satiafsc.ory in every particular.
When interrogated aa to the probabil
ity of the office being removed from
Alexaodria Mr. Agnew could give no
po.itive answer from the fact that such a
change cauuot be made at the ip*e ijixit
of the collector; a change of location can
only be made by the authorities in
Washingtou, and'as between $60,000
and $70,000 have recently been ex
pended oii the public building in thia
city in order to accommodate the in
terual revenue officers, a change of lo?
cation is improbable, lo aay the least.
Besides the contiguity of Alexaodria to,
Washington is a desideratum not to he
overlooked. Mr. Aguew was OfWla
aioued May 1, 1SW, and by the 6rat of
May will have s-rved eight yeara. He
has a aplendid record as collector and
hia endorsemeuU from ihe busineas in
terests of Northern Virgiuia aud Wash?
ingtou city are very heavy.
Mr. Summers is a youug man, 3.")
years old, aod is an energelic republican.
It is not thought that (he new collec?
tor will make many material changes
atnong the subordinates in the office, as
nioat of this clasa are serving uuder civil
service regulations.
Concert.
As anticipated, a large and fashionable
audience includiog many from Semmary
Hill assembled at the Opera House laat
night to greet the Uoiveraity ol Virginia
Glee and Mandoliu Clubs. A large
number of ladica of tbis city were
patronesaes ol thecoucert, which waaun
der the auspicie* ol the Old Dominion
Boat Clnb. Musical tributea ?o ihe orange
and blue opened the concert and the
well-known colora appcared also in the
draperieaol thestage nnd in the Vir?
ginia pennants that were in evidence.
The eotertainment was a typical col
lege glee club concert, medleys, of
course, prodominaling and holding a
lirin placein the tavor of tbe audience.
Botk vocally and instrumentally tbe eo?
tertainment waa good, the latter being
the better, however. After payiug tbeir
reapecUs to their university the Mando
lin Club plaved a very attractive pot
pourri of meiodie* from "The Sultan of
Sulu," then the Glee Club coutributed a
lund of melodious inlormation on a
variety of topics. A medley commenced
bv informing the audience that "l'm
aocrazy," theu giviug tbe impression
that a lady naraed "Julia" had somethuig
to do with the state of montal disorder,
and then sang "Good-by, Little Girl,
Good-by," presumable lo tbe young
lady, ouly to inl'orm her afterward that
?'I Was Only Teasing You." Alter thia
reference was made to Cleopatra and ap
parentlv apropoa of nothing, the audi
ieuce w'as informed that the singera were
gotng "Back, Back, Blck toBaltirnor*."
Ibr which purpose "All Aboard for'
Drearaland" wascalled, anl tbe whole
jolly, inconaistent, incomprehensible,
rollickiug stunt ended with a tribute to
the "Old Virginia Blue" ?for of such
things are college medleys made. Au
other number was that given by Messrs.
Luck. McVeigb, Gilee aod Edgar, who
sang a ?olo about tbe rural lovers who
sat one day by tbe old oak tree, to
whora the dove aaid **Coo, coo, come
along and woo," andthecrowsaid "Oaw.
caw. you're the worst I ever saw,"
and who continued in their lovemaking
juat aj if the birda were not speaking.
The ()uartette. who were not very well
inatched as to aize, added much to the
fun of thia song by tbe practical illustra
tiona of the afl'ectionate attifudea of the
rural lovers. The fortunes of Bohunkus
and Joaepbua were told in detail, even
d >wn to the days on which they wore
tbeir new ahoea and the location of their
aeaU in tbe theatre. Tbeir ultiroate
deatination--Bohunkus up to heaven
and aloaephus to anotier place?was re
ported alao. Peligbtful soloa were aung
by Mr. W. McJauies and Mr. L (J.
Adaraa and, in aJdltiou to tbe selectioas
by the Mandolin Club, which were
piayed aith spirit and rhythmic pre
eision, there were aome attractive instru
menUl aelectiona by Meaars. Robert
Rosserand F. M. Rummel. Tbe Olee
Club waa directed by Mr. R. B. Craw
ford and the Mandolin Club by Mr,
Robert Roaaer, with Mr. C. P. Bonn as
accompaniat.
After the ct.ncert the roembers of the
cluba werehandaoroely entertained at tbe
reaidence of Mr. A. D Brockeit by tbe
Alexandria alunini of the University.
Later they left M their return to the
