qualities :
"1. His uniniiininntiveiiesH. "When
he hii.s nothing to suy, he says notliiiifj.
In private he fills no interstices of con
versation by remarks upon the weather,
or inquires after the babies of his visi
tor. In public he can make no speeches
simply of form or compliment; and
since the world cared to hear his opin
ions on nfl'airs, his oOlelal position has
never allowed him to speak freely. But
in public or private, when he has any
thing to utter by tongue or pen, he says
it with extreme rapidity and clearness,
in terse, marrowy, idiomatic lOnglish.
FiVen then he clothes his thoughts in
no Mowers of rhetoric, but presents them
in the plainest, homliest words. .Napo
leon's memorable sayings are all of this
order. 'Fioin these summits forty cen
turies look down upon you.' 'We will
carry our victorious eagles beyond the
pillars of Hercules.' (rant's are the
exact antipodes : 'I have no terms but
unconditional surrender.' 'I propose to
move immediately upon your works.'
'I shall tight it out on this line if it
t ikes all Hummer.' T found the army
like a balky horse.' '(en. Butler was
bottled up.' Said the dramatic Corsi

satisfied with you. You have decorated
your eagles with immortal glory.' Said
the matter-of-fact American to his
shouting men after Tort Gibson: 'Sold
iers. I thank you. That is all can
say. You have done a good day's work
to-day, but you must do a better to-morrow.'

les-i fuss and fewer feathers than any

'That which is in.' He accepts things

him, however prosaic ami disagreeable.
He acts his convictions instead of talk

"He is utterly genuine and

estate the sweetness and simplicity of
his country boyhood, Altogether free
from cant, his lips obeying the teach
ings of his mother, have uttered no
oath, been soiled by no coarseness.
"He is a miracle of serenity and f-olf-poise.
During the terrors of Belmont,
when an aide, with pallid cheeks, cried,
'Why, General, we are surrounded ! we
arc surrounded!' there was no percepti
ble change in his pleasant face or calm
voice as he answered, 'Then we will
cut our way out.' Three years later,
as he read Lee's dispatch proposing the
surrondcr of the Army of Northern
Virginia, ho was equally unmoved : no
elation shone in his face, or sounded in
the ordinary tone in which lie asked,
'Well, Gen. Rawlins, how do you think
that will do ?' 'Tried by both extremes
of fortune and never disturbed by ei
ther,' he remains as simple and unaf
fected to-day as in his yearn of poverty
and obscurity."
