The i&coticiflalioii of (Inn. unl (leu. Hiitirr. (I rant A despatch to the Howton Adrrrthcv (ill- the following story : " l ite iVionilri of (Jen. (Jrant said to them that if there was a quarrel it va not on i lu tde, and that he had no hostility j toward, (Jen. liutlir. Another deleia-1 tion took up the matter two months auo and eciually unsueeesful, though 1 Senator u iiso;i was one oi the peions intereiU d. (Jeoro WHUi's liniilly rii 1 aired himself with the (piestion, and mi'Iiih to have heljied (.'en. Jtutler out of hi-' d'.illeulties. lie talked with (Jen. ljilkf and his friends and after learn ing iluir grievances had a talk with (en. (irant. It appeares that (Jen. Mnt ler was mueli Incensed at (Jen. (.rant lor removing him from the command of the Army of the James just before the i nd of the war, and that when Gen. (Jrant, duiiiiK the first winter of his Ksidence here, sent out the invitations to his lhvt i;rand party, (Jen. IJutler coneiived that the sending of one to him waj intended as an inmlt. Where upon he returned it in short order, since which time he has had no intercourse with (Jen. (irant, except of a formuland ollicial character. The adjustment of tlu situation was made by one letter from (Jeorne Wilkes to Gen. Jlutlcr, one from Gen. Under to George Wilkes, one fiom George Wilkes to Gen. Grant, and finally a note of ten or twelve lines from (ion. GranMo George Wilkes. It is understood that Gen. Rulli'i- volun tarily withdrew his rejection of Gen. Grant's party invitation on a statement from Mr. Wilkes that Gen. Grant said to him that he had not had the least in tention to insult Gen. Under in sending i', and was much surprised at its return. Geit (Jrant further said verbally that lie meant no personal disrespect of (Jen. ltutli r in the language of his report at the uo.-e of the war. That phrase about iieing "nottleu up" was common in the army at that time, and was used to ex press a military fact. Gen. Butler re sponded to Mr. Wilkes that lie does not so much object to these words as to the general tenor of the report, which he considers unfair towards him. Gen. Grant'anote says that he is willing to consider (Sen. Butler's return of his card as withdrawn, and that while lie cannot open matters about his report, in which he had no intention of wronging any one, lie is willing that Gen. Butler should ask for n court of inquiry if he chooses. The correspondence was brought to a conclusion with this note, and it is stated to be satisfactory to Mr. Midler's friends. Thrill inn font rant. A painter once met a beautiful child. So enraptured was he with its counten ance and expression of loveliness, that he resolved to paint it. lie did so, and hung his favorite picture in his study, lie made it his guardian angel. In sor row and in passion lie sought relief and tranquility in gazing on that counte nance, lie proposed that if lie ever saw its opposite ho would uaint that alpo. Mut years passed away before he found a face so infernally ugly as to satisfy his idea of a perfect contrast to his darling picture. It was that of u wretch lying in despair upon the floor of his cell, lie painted that terrible countenance. But what must have been his emotions when lie learned it was the same peison he had painted before? The first was the face of the innocent child ; the last that of the reckless, ruined youth. The best things perverted become the worst. The sweetest juice, changed, becomes the sharpest acids. That little angel's likeness had been metamorphosed into that of a fiend.
