Senators holding over, in all 16, of whom 10 are Republicans and 8 Opposition, leaving 23 to be elected, of whom two are to be elected for one year only, to fill vacancies. In the 28th district the vacancy was occasion ed by a contest in which the Senate decided the election of last year illegal and in the 38th district a vacancy is said to have been occasioned by the removal of Senator Free man, Rep., from the State. We notice that a candidate has been nominated to succeed Mr. Freeman but have seen no official recog nition of the alleged vacancy. Deeds of Darkness In Shelby Coun ty, Ky. From apparently reliable sources it is reported that in Shelby county, Ky., Saturday night, a band of masked men visited a religious meeting, but did no violence beyond hitting several per sons as they came out of church. Af terwards they went to the house of Thomas Ford, white, where they whip-1 ped three negroes, and threatened Mr. a Ford with the same treatment unless he discharged those employed by him. From Ford's the party went to the house of a negro named Barrington and called for him to come ottside, when on his refusal to do so, they fired into the house, one ball striking the daughter of Barrington, sixteen years old, who was sleeping on the floor, putting out her eye and burying itself in her shoulder. Two of the band then broke the door, and after cursing Barrington, rode off. At last accounts the wounded girl was still living, but in a precarious condi tion. It is probable that Gov. Leslie will take immediate steps to capture and bring to justice the murderous wretches. -—A newspaper is the only instru ment which can drop the same th tught into a thousand minds at the same mo ment.
