CENTENNIAL. BY MRS. E. AKERS. There's a halo on the mountains, There's a glory on the plains, There's a brightness in the valleys, In our land where freedom reigns .And the nation's song of jubilee ^Hings out in accents clear j» *»e watchers on the tower tell The *ea* Centennial Year! From her nouheln Jakes and rivers, To where her.*et she laves In the waters of tue R»o Grande, And in the Gulf's »daTk wave.s West, ,_ From the Atlantic, that x,road S that the wood's gee*} boasts, To where Pacific's waters wash One glad Te Deum sings. One hundred years! A century Has rolled its decades on, Since pariots, with voice and pen, a Her far-famed golden coasts O'er mountain, plain and valley Soft Peace has spread her wings, And North and South, and East fund Proclaimed a nation born: The bells rang out a gladsome peal And joy was over all, Wherever came the tidings of That birth in Congress Hall And the world looked on and wondering saw, While in her infant years, The nation clinging to her faith, Baptized in blood and tears. Now build we here a monument To Columbia. Let the base Be Lexington, it is laid in blood, And on its sides we trace The names of the brave seven, The first who martyrs fell In the great cause of freedom, That we in peace might dwell. Next bid the gallant Prescott Bring Bunker Hill, that block, Sealed with a General Warren's blood, Has braved a Century's shock: Now bring Ticondergao, Place Crown Point by its side, Write on them Ethan Allen's name, He was a soldier tried. Fort Moultrie, carved with Moultrie's name, And Trenton, bravely won, Place next, with Princeton just beside, Write on them—Washington, Bring Brandywine, and on it write Names of the brave and true Next Germantown we place, nor let One name be lost to view. Two blocks from Saratoga bring Write Gates on only one, Carve Mercy weeping o'er the name Of Arnold, lost, undone. Bring Monmouth on, and Stony Point, Write Washington and Wayne, Place Eutaw Springs and Camden near, Each block is known to fame Fill every niche with smaller stones, It matters not how small, And then with Yorktown crown the whole, And place our flag o'er all. Pomona Grange, No.—, P. of H. or GOODHUE COUNTY, MINN. An adjourned meeting of this Grange was held at Temperance Hall, in this city, on the 16th inst. As the weather was so inclement that traveling in the country was extremely difficult and even dangerous, because of the snow storm which was still prevailing aftor having continued nearly all the previous day and night, the attendance was small. The meeting was called to order by the Worthy Master, Mr. Wm. Hayman and the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The Worthy M.ister then read to the Grange the following interesting ad dress, which was listened to with mark ed attention by all present: ADDRESS OF THE W\ M. Brothers and Siiters:—At the first organization of this Rpniona Grange, you thought fit to honor me with your choice for Worthy Master. While I am truly thankful for this murk of your confidence, I am somewhat anxious lest you may be disappointed in my ability to fill the position to the advantage of us all. It may be humiliating tu me, but I want to be honest with you, and admit th.it I hive but a plain un derstanding of parliamentary rules. If I should by some act hurt the feel ings of any Brother or Sister, I trust they will call my attention to it in a spirit of love and friendship, knowing that we are all tanners and not expect ed to be posted in all the technicalities of parliamentary rulings. Now, the question arises shall this Pomona Grange be a success Brothers and Sisters, this lays with ourselves. This is a question that should be upper most in all our minds. There are many members who think that our efforts as grangers so far have been useless there is another class that have faith in this organization, and hope in t\\e near fu- ture to see all the benefits accruing from it that we may reasonably expect there is still another class, who think that this Order has already done a great work in bringing farmers together and establish ing an intimacy and sociable feeling among them, which is of itself, in my opinion, sufficient to remunerate us for the trouble and outlay we have been at in keeping up the organization. Broth ers, it is our duty as I trust it is our pleasure to make the meetings of this Pomona Grange so interesting that we shall always look forward with pleasure to our next meeting. In the Eastern and Middle States the formation of Pomona Granges are meeting with great success. In many cases I read of farmers traveling thirty to forty miles to attend the County Grange, and assembling in large num bers of from one to two hundred. Broth ers, cannot the farmers of Goodhue do likewise I wish to see the granges" frW ka°k a represented ^is county fully in tl"8 Gr»DSe "in un* ion there is itf#Ogwh" Certainly every order has its infancy. There are many members of sound sense and ability associated with us from whom we expect to hear many suggestions for the good of the Order. But, in the first plaie, we must learn to place confidence in one another, and not only in one another, but in ourselves* for without this essential thing all our efforts will be in vain. There is not one amongst us but who can suggest some thing for the general benefit. How many valuable thoughts will come to a Sister or Brother in their quiet homelife, which should be brought before us as a matter of action or even of information. Take these thoughts home with you and at our next meeting bring your gleanings along, for each one of you is accountable for the success or failure of our Pomona Grange. Several items of business growing out of current expenses were next disposed of, applications for membership to the Fifth Degree were presented and acted upon, and errors in the by-laws previ ously adapted were corrected. By re quest, the rules of the State Grange for the government of Pomona Granges were read by the Chaplain, who also gave some interesting instructions con* cerning the work of the Order.
