From the Atetiison Cl'ampion.
Tlie Btllew family, on Twentieth street,
have settled their disinttes, and conse
quently there will be no more revenue
derived by the chy from semi-occasional
fines from the paternal head of the fam
ily. The difficulties have been as fol
lows '. David T. Bellew, a teacher of
languages and telegraph operator, mar
ried the widow of an aged but respecta
ble merchant of Terre Haute, Ind., about
three years ago. Bellew had been tutor
to Mi^s Dora, the eldest, and Miss Nettie
C, the youngest of old Glassner's family.
Soon alter his marriage he removed with
his? wife to Kansas City, where he en
gaged in the dairying and market garden
business. Considerable property is said
to ,vo been purchased, but as to thii
nothing definite is known.
Bellew proved to be a worthless, lazy
character, and a nuisance to the southern
end of the city. About three weeks ago
Mrs. Bellew went back to Terre Haute an
invalid, leaving her oldest daughter Dora
in charge of the family affairs. This
young lady, *t appears, held a right and
title to the Seventeenth street property.
It was her own by her own individual
right, having been purchased with hei
own money in the name of a trustee, and
held for her own use. Her drunken
stepfather had been a source of great an
noyance and aggravation for two or thret
years past, lie has insulted the young
man who has been paying attention to
\\\i stepdaughter, and in fact prevented
his visits to the house. Tuesday night,
however, the young ladies invited a half
dozen or more young friends to the house,
among them Mr. Joe C. the afore
said young ouitor from Seneca, Ks., a for
mer friend of the family in Indiana. The
old man came home about ten o'clock
with a friend, but fidhing some strangers
present went out again to the avenue,"
and came back about an hour afterwards
and broke up the party.
Not satisfied with this, Bellew attacked
his stop-daughter in a violent manner
nd was, seconded by his drunken guest,
who, it is 1o be regretted, stands high as
a citizen. The dilemma of the young
ladies was a painful one, but Miss Dora
was equal to the emergency. She re
quested the young gentleman visiting
her to expel the two drunken men. It
was done instantaneously and effectively,
both parties roiling promiscuously out
into the street. Early on Friday morn
ing the courageous young lady was mar
ried to her choice, and within three hours
afterwards accompanied her husband to
court to answer to a charge of assault.
The old man is left out high and dry now.
The home which knew him once will
know him no more. The courageous
young lady has the best wishes of the
Times—she solved a family difficulty suc
cessfully. Everybody in the "soutn end"
endorses the brave young girl in her
practical way of evading a family quar
rel.

'X'HIS MUM continues to tie tlie strenuous auvocate ot
reform and retrenchment, and of the substitution of
statesmanship, wisdom, and integrity foe hollow pre

public affairs. It contends for the government of the
people by the people and for the people, as opposed to

to supply its readers—a body now not far from a million
of souls—with thu most careful, complete, and trust
worthy accounts of current events, ana employs for this
purpose a numerous and carefully selected staff of re
porters and correspondents. Its reports from Washing

doubtless continues to deserve and enjoy the hatred of
those who thrive by plundering tho Treasury or by usurp

to merit the confidence* of the public by defending the
the rights of the people against the encroachments of
unjustified power.

H. R. STEVENS
Dear Sir—1 have been sick two years with, the
Liver complaint, and during that time have taken a
great many different medicines, but none of them
did me any good. I was restless nights, and bad no
appetite. Since taking the VEGETIME I rest well and
relish my food. Can recommend the VEOETINE for
what it has done for me. Yours respectfully,
Mna. ALBERT BICKER.
