Abbott, assissed by Mian Laura Loomts, en tertained a small audience of our citizens, on Saturday evening last. The programme was well arranged, and executed in a man ner that elicited the highest encomiums of praise and admiration from the listeners.— Although Charlie has traveled nearly all over the world and a large portion of the United Statee, he says that no place he ever saw pleased him more than Minnesota. Sorry are we to see the indifference which is manifested by our City Council with re gard to rabid dogs, and enter our earnest protest against it. It does really seem as if they cared little whether our citizens were killed off by mad dogs or qot. We believe with the St. Anthony Wties, that some or dinance should be passed that would do away with about eleven or eight thousand of the worthless canines that infest our oity. If the Council do not enact stringent dog law, we hope the dogi will take particular pains to tear the seat—of the pantaloons of every Alderman in the city who opposes it and if in their great wisdom they should see fit to consult the interests of the com munity and pass the law, then, we hope the dogs wdl tear the pantaloons off from the Marshal entirely if be don't enforce it. Lumsden was found guilty of robbing the mails at the St. Paul P. O. of two land war rants in the fall of 1858. The Jury were out about three hours. A motion was made for a new trial, but overruled by Judge Kelson. Lumsden was to have been sentenced on Thursday.—M*nne*otian $ Tinea, We learn that quite a Urge number are at present engaged in digging ginseng in the "Big Woods." Prices, however, are not quite so high as they have been, only 5 to 6 cents per pound being now offered for it in the green state. But even at those prices diggers are making from $1,50 to $3,00 per day.—9«. Anthony Express, The Rochester City Pott, notices the birth of a calf, in that place, with two heads Also, tho passage through the city of eighty^ nine emigrant wagons bound for the central and western portions of our State. Mr. Winslow, of St. Paul, it is said, will he back from the East with the wire for the telegraph, in a few days. How he gets it nobody knows. He has a faculty of doing what nobody else can do, in sixteen States. He built the Winslow House, State House, Court House, end a dozen buildings at St. Paul the Winslow House and the State University at St. Anthony the Winslow House at St. Peter, and another large hotel at Belle Plaine, all of which must have cost not less than $4)0,000, and yet he is report ed not to have ben worth a cunt of proper ty all the time. Over one hundred teams, laden with im migrants and their goods, have passed thro' this plaee, westward, within the past week Every train has a large number of cattle, and some of them were accompanied by fine flocks of sheep.—IfrntorvWe Express Mr. John Garrison, of this township, re cently sheared from a merino buck, a fleece of wool weighing twclvo pounds. The fleece taken from the same sheep last year, weigh ed ten pounds. Is Minnesota too cold" for sheep 1—IMd Four flat boats loaded with ice from Lake Pepin, and lashed together, en route to St, Louis, got aground near the month of Bear Creek, Sunday forenoon, and did not get off until late in the evening. The ferry boat T. R. Selmes hauled at them for some time, and finally succeeded in releasing them.— We learn that one boat was lost in coming over the rapids.—Mi*Vuri Democrat. We learn from the Winona Republican that a serious affray recently occurred in that city between two men named Simpson and Goddard, in which the former was pret ty roughly handled. Simpson had been buying wheat for a St. Louis firm, which was represented by Goddard, and refused to deliver the same to him for shipment until he had received a balancedue him of $1,250 whereupon, Goddard, assisted by the cap tain and mate of the steamer Lake City, pounced upon him, and would probably have killed hint but for the interference of some citizens who were standing by. Goddard and the captain were arrested and fined $20 each, and costs—the whole amounting to $5d,45. Simpson got his $1,250. Mr. Johnson, who was recently found dead in the Mississippi, near La Crosse, left Elkhorn two weeks ago last Monday, to visit a sister at Red Wing, and was doubt less on his way, when he was either mur dered or accidentally drowned. He had with him $35 in money when he left- He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss. He was a Norwegian and enterpris ing citizen. The people of St. Paul are enjoying avout an equal run of small pox and Lincoln en thusiasm. They are in doubt as to which is the most disagreeable of the two.—Min neapolis Plain Dealer. The prices of good forming lands in this county are rapidly advancing. In the neigh borhood of St. Charles the advance is equal to one dollar and a half per acre. It is to be estab lished at the falls of S Anthony, the great water power there rendering it a most eligible location. There is, probably, over fifty tons of common printing paper used in tho city of St. Paul every year, foF which the hard cash hag to be paid, and we note with gratification eyery instance of pro gress in manufacturing for ouselves, that will serve to retain within our own borders the Urge amount of moll now getting out to the benefit of other States.—Pioneer.
