Mttor and Tar»«9a.ool Year,$1.00 for Six Months. TH JltSDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1883. PRESIDENT AtAKlNO. The political situation begins now to be interesting. All at, once, there falls out of the political sky a shower which changes the forecasts as to the crop and harvest of 1888. Mr. Blaine has written a letter to Chairman Jones, of the National Republican committee, positively declining to be a candidate before the Chicago Convention. This will settle the matter as to his candidncy. The ADVANCE is pleased to know that he is out of the race. Twice we favored Blaine, aud twice he failed, first to secure the Cincinnati nomination, and then to win after be ing nominated. Blaine is too well known, too great a party leader, to suc ceed. Simultaneously with the publication 'of Blaine's letter, comes the announce nient that there is great rebellion in the Cleveland ranks. Kearly every Northern state has some strong politi cian opposed to Cleveland's renomina tion. It is by no means settled, as was supposed, that Cleveland will be the Democratic nominee again. Third, there begins to be alow mur mer, a bare whisper among thtrees, that the political wind is rising in fav or of little Gen. Phil. Sheridan (anoth er Ohio man) for the Republican nom ination. The bare mention of his name suggests "luck", "destiny", '4foreordi nation," and while weshould not think of choosing him as "our man," we should not be surprised to see him mount that "dark horse" of his (this too is significant,) and make another twenty-mile ride and snatch another Republican victory from the jaws of a Democratic army of occupation. THE "OLD FOLKS." The mother of Dr. J. M. Peebles died recently at the home of her son in Ilatumonton, N. J. A copy of the Re publican of that place is before us an nouncing the death and containing letter from the Dr. in which he says "It has been the privilege of Mrs. Pee bles and myself to have both of our sainted mothers spend their last years in our residence and under our own immediate care and be it said to their praise and honor, they both contributed to the making of our home the more bright and sunny and we in turn tried to anticipate their wants, to plant flowers along their weary journeys, and make their declining years as pleasant and peaceful as possible. This was our joy and our duly. And ought the younger to ever miss an opportunity of showing attention to the aged, of prof fering a kindness, or lighting up a smile upon their faces with the utterance of kind and friendly words"? We could not help contrasting this with the conduct of the much-vaunted, over-praised Garfield family, who re cently abandoned the aged mother of the assassinated President to die at home, while they hied themselves away to Europe on a pleasure trip. Dr. Pee bles is Christian Spiritualist and such a mau will always be faithful to his trust and will "honor his father and mother" to the last. A Christian Spir itualist will never desert his father and mother, will never go to war, will nev er hang an anarchist or any one else, and will never, never persecute anyone. When we think how little respect the Americans have for father and mother how little obligation they fet-1 to take care of parents in old age, and how flippantly and readily tl ey desert them, we feel that the Chinese are the better Christians of the two, and that thousands of our people are "making their beds in hell" (not the otthodox one,) by their selfishness and their fail ure to "take care of the old folks." Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten seasou. This continues until Easter Sunday, which this year falls upon the first day of A pril. The season of Lent is in com memoration of Christ's 40 days' fast the wilderness. W lierever the Catholic, Protestant Episcopal and Greek church es prevail, Lent is observed by special services in the churches, by fasting and by abstinence from worldly pleasures and amusements. The proportion of church people who really observe it is very small, probably not one in thou sands, but nearly all cut off something, forego some pleasure or some debauch, and make a show of observance. Thus the students, at an Episcopal college, met and gravely resolved thatduringthe Lenten season thpy would forego the customary boarding house "hash." Rightly observed, the Lenten season is one of the most salutary requirements that ever a wi*e church provided for an ignorant, flesh-eating, animal race. The man or woman who began yester day, and who holds out faithful to "the end "of forty days, abstaining from stimulants, meats and all indul gence of the "flesh." will find himself or herself on the high table lands of of the spirit instead of upon the low lands and miasmatic marshes of the body. Thi9 is sermon No. 1. No. 2 will be preached about Easter. Anthony Comstock is "made fun of" from all sides. The Cincinnati La bor Enquirer says he should have pow er taken from him before he compels people to wear green spectacles to cov er the naked eye. Some one writes from Philadelphia to the Truth Seeker that he has had pants put on the legs of his piano, and Watson Heston, the Truth Seeker's cartoonist, shows a hog hanging up by the hind feet with a coat and pants on. This fun is well enough in its way. hut Comstock needs severe blows. He should be so universally despised and so thoroughly prosecuted that no man can ever again be found mean enough, slave enough, bigot and tyrant enough, to be his successor. The Republican Club of New York celebrated Lincoln's birthday on the 12th. This should become a general custom. Some day an average will be struok and Washington's be celebrated with Lincoln's. It is a sort of coinci dence that both the "Father's of the Country*' should be born in February, and so near "apart." LIST OF DELINQUENT TAXES For the Tear 1886. STATE OF MINNESOTA, COUNTYOF NOBLES.
