BICYCLISTS AS J PUR.1
Possibility of Their Clubs Becom?
ing Political Centers.
Politic ans Believe that, as Has Been
the Case with Similar Organiza?
tions,-Clubs of Cyclists will
. Become Important Fac?
tors in Local Polit Ci.
It is tho opinion of sage and experi?
enced politicians that it will not be
very long before the- various wheelmen's
clubs, so numerous nowadays, will take
an active part iu politics. Such a propo?
sition would probably bo dlsBUtcd as
nntrno by the great majority of wheel
mon, who iirn indifforout to political
affairs and who arc generally agreed j
that the keeping of politics out of a so
cial organization is one of the surest
pledges of its peraiaiii uce. Mut the con?
ditions arc hot favorable to tho position
they take, and if these conditions do
rot rosr.lt in sonio form of political ac?
tivity iu cycling '-Ichs all previous in?
dications Will 00 belied.
All OV0I there uro now bicycle clubs
occupying usually rooms in what uro
called "residential quarters," and these
rooms are the mooting places of thou?
sands Of young men of votiug age and
companionable ways. Tho subjects di.-,
CUSSOd are fur removed from politics,
but. as is invariably tho case where
young men are associated in a social or?
ganization for tho purposes of mutual
good fellow .-hip, ouo or more of the
members become loaders in the club,
and "moving spirits" iu its ulfairs.
The politicians of every party are al?
ways on the lookout for desirable candi?
dates for local nominations, and the put?
ting in the Held of a wheelman favora?
bly thought of by his associates in a
wheelmen'* club would naturally mean
the active and oQlcieut support of a
number of his associates, Unconscious?
ly, therefore, though tho club might
taku no part us a club iu the campaign,
the result would bo tho snuio as if it
had done bo, und the moiubt rs of that
club would Ix como attached to tho party
or faction to which tho candidate be?
longed. At tho next contest tho oppos?
ing party would be protty certain to put
junomiuutn.ii n candidate who had at
least the support of a rival wheelmen's
club iu the district, or of wheelmen
there, and so the cyclers would be
"brought into politics."
This has hugely been tho rule with
social organisations of whatever char?
acter or description.
In recent years the first of tho
quasi-political clubs wore tho volun?
teer tiro companies. Then came tho
military company clubs, tho Grand Ar?
my posts, the veterans' associations and
finally the literary and debating clubs.
It is safe to say that not one of the lat?
ter was established with the view of
promoting the politi.-al advantage of uuy
Tuemlyr. Hut sooner or later OUO mem
bor become so prominent us to possess
influence in the club ranks, if not con?
trol of the political activity of its mem?
bers. Then ho was nominated for uu
office; then ho secured the support of
his friends in the club for the sido with
which he was allied, and finally the
club became known as having a certain
political lonniug.
It is much hoped by many cyclists
that the clubs may kei p out of polities,
-for pernicious political activity i- not
conducive to the success of such organi?
sations, but the snug clnbroouis und
"tho increasing membership of the or?
ganisations aro tempting to the politi?
cians, and tho result may be foreshad?
owed. Lost year the cyclists cut quite,

Tbo Iowa Duiiioorata on Aug. 7 do
olared ageinsl freo coinage of silver at
IB to l by on overwhelming majority.
Tho following is a sh01 t Quotation from
tho speech of Hon. Nathaniel 1'reneh,
cliairmuu of the convention:
"At what ratio shall wo coin tho
metals so that a dollar of one will equal
a dollar uf tho other In intrinsic and
exchangeable value? When wo want to
know how much things are worth, WO
go to tho imukcts and find out. Wo
don'I hunt up a coiigressmuu to ttslc tho
vulnoof eggs or spring chickens or grain
or anything else, or if congress bus do
elan d what their vuluo shall bo. We
know that the mere declaration of con?
gress, or oven u- constitutional amend?
ment, could not li.\ the price of a single
egg. In like munnor, if wo want to know
how many onnues of silver an ouuco of
gold is worth, wo must go to the bul?
lion markets instead of the revised
statute.,- Thomas Jefferson could not
have wen undying fame as n Htatosiuau
and leader of the common pnoplo If ho ,
had not been endowed with an tibun- j
dance of common sense, and over 100 ;
years ugo, when opiigross sought bis ad- i
vioe OS to tbo ratio to adopt for the ?
coinage of gold and silver, he said:
'Disregard legal proportions tiltugothor.
Inquire into the market price.' Ho ,
knew thut opinions should not und
could not be controlled by legislation.
Ho knew that tho basic laws of trade i
wore moro powi-ifnl than the laws of
nations and that tho multiplication
table could not t " altered by statute,
"To so coin gold and silver thai both
shall oirculnto together by re,eon of
parity of value we must follow Joffer
sou's advice and inquire the price of
gold and silver in the markets of tho
world. If wo find onoouncoof gold will
buy 89 ounces of silver, that is tbo ratio
to adopt. To put in tbo silver dollar
more than ;i'J grains Of silver for each
gram of gold ill ill" gold dollar would
at once drive our silver money from cir?
culation, and to put in le.-s would ban?
ish our gold. The loss of ttitllOl' would
bo a misfortune, and to retain both wo
must adopt the moronutiloratio, putting
in our coins no moro und no less than is
needed to luako one of equal value to
the other. "
