AN ANIMATED CONTEST Professional Traders Enter Into Spirited Rivalry for Control of the Market. BULLS MET FORMIDABLE OBSTACLES Ybo Slniitprtlnlloii In tlio CltBO ol Iii? The manipula? tion in the case of these stocks was very open and palpable, but some substan? tial gains were shown by railroad stocks on the firm basis of increased earnings. There were a number of stocks also which were persistently heavy in tone, and required vigorous support to pre? vent the spread of weakness through the whole market. This was notably true of Sugar, Which ruled for some time below yesterday's closing price and fell at one time to the extent -of a point. London was a very large seller of stocks on balance in this market, and the vol? ume of sales on that account is estimated as high as 40,000 shares, ehibraclng all of the international stocks. Union Par c'.flc fell 1 Vi on the resolution of the Senate to postpone the Kansas l'acillc sale. Manhattan, Northwest and North? ern Pacific and some other less prom? inent stocks showed a heavy tone dur? ing the Whole of the early part of the day. These causes together with the Inertness of the Granger group were a persistent drag on the market. The later part of tho day saw a very animated contest between professional traders for the control of the market. In tho majority of the standard rail? way shares which were left free from manipulation, Ithe changes are small, t'liouffh gains approaching a point ate shown In some Southern railroads which are showing god earning capacity. Quite a number of small losses are dho'wri, la? the specialties, on the other hand. In? cluding 'Manhattan, Tobacco, Leather preferred, Rubber preferred, Btooklyn Transit, Metropolitan Traction and q number of the Vanderbllts. gains extend from a point to 2"i, the latter In Man? hattan. The bond market continued active and broad, some notable gains being shown In special cases anil the level of prices thoughout the lift showing a material! advance. St. Louis and San Francisco Trust Hs arc 7 per cent, higher. Mobile and Ohio 4s rose 2=;.; per cent.'in accord with the rise of 4U in the .stock of ?.hat company. Missouri Pacific bonds were all strong, the collateral 5s rising 3 per cent, further, the consol Gs 2 and the Trust fis IV4. The total sales reached a par value of I3.SOO.000. Government 'bonds were strong all around, both the old and the new 4sj advancing \'t bid, and the r.<s '/H bid. The total sales of slocks were 3M.0O0 shares.
