A Word on the side of Politics.
NEW PARIS, June 2, 1859.
Di.ar Emimkk From the aoutli of our his
ter continent, over the sea, wj recuive news
ol the enrolling of mighty columns of arm.
ed men to do battle, and from every section
of our Htate we receive accounts of the en,
rolling of men for the coming contest The
arms are not similar in construction nor
alike in oonsequenoe, but are equally effect
ive in results. While Italy and her allies
contend at the cannon's mouth and at the
point of the bayonet, for the right to govern
themselves, and to put down Auatriuo mis
rule, it behooves the Dtmooralio party to
say whether the lcgnl majority shall rule,
and lo give a death blow to the mis-rule and
fanaticism of the agitators who have tho an.
parent control of our State.
This quietus must be given at the bullot
box at our next election, That it will be
given, I have not tha least doubt. Our 8tate
ticket is the best nominated for ra iny yearn.
The men meet with coromeudalion Irom all
parties, and there is no question put upon
the platform adopted hy I ho Convention
nominating the ticket To that no democrat
will object. The language may nut be just
such as many would use to express the same
views, but the sentiment, the sturdy truth is
the sama that all good democrats hold to be
immutable. This truth I hear many abl
republicans acquiescing in, especially since
the promulgation of tha Cleveland nulliUers
To a patriot, tho meeting at Cleveland, at
Vicksburg, the Obcrlin rescuers, the ju
ries in the Echo case, el id omne genui,
present the profoundest causes for regret.
Let such meetings be of frequent occur
rence, and their resolves put in active ope
ration, without speedy and effective pnnishi
ment, and the power of the government will
be prostrated.
It is a source of congratulation that we
have three jurists upon our Supreme bench
and but two politicians, slue the -nine utter
disregard to solemn oaths and the sanctity
of law would havo disgruoed the heretofore
unsullied escutcheon of Ohio, that dow
covers with everlasting disgrace and obloquy,
the Stute of outh Carolina. I am against
sedition laws. 1 think It is better that these
exeresences upon the eofporata body politic
should have full chance to form an abstiess.
and discharge their noisome matter. I
would only provide, if possible, against sup
puration, that there may be no mark or soar,
when the wound lieuls. To that end there
fore I would give, as is now given, free and
uncurbed privilego to all who wish to parti
cipate in making egregious fouls and incipi,
ent traitors cf themselves, to meet at Vicks
burg and Clevelund, each fortnight in suc
cession for j ears; and there resolve and
re-resolve let Oivernor Chase oopy his
bomeopalhio counsel of "like eures like,"
nr six inches of the mad dog's caudal ap
pendage good for hydrophobia and let
Joshua It. fling his gruy hair to the lake
brenea and, in iminagtaation, kill more
slave owners aud U. 8. Marshals, in the res
cue of the sable sisters, than did aver Don
(juixotte, the redoubtable hero of enchanted
wind-mills, in the rescue of La Muncha's
favored daughter. To this eud would I let
the volcanic southern neighbors and ooitrai
tors of cbersedotu, make their frequent
eruptions, and imaginary slave codas for the
territories. But when these gentlemen at
tempt to practically embody these resolves
of theirs, by any overt means, tben I would
have the laws against traitors rigorously en
forced. Let all such feel the power of out.
.raged law, and in a short time we will have
nothing but the legal means of getting rid
of diaagreeable or obxooiious lava resort
ed to.
