The Late Battle—the English Press.
The late battle, wbinh waa fought at Ma

engagement would aoon take plaoe, some
where in that vicinity, but Europe and
America atand aetoundad at the Dews of
thirty-seven thousand men lying killed and
wounded on the field of battle. It ia hard
to realise. Imagine every inhabitant of a

The town itself is a little out of the way

out in tha shape of a aemi oircle, the north
ern wing being near Como, commanded by
Oaribaldi; the middle at Milan and the aouthi
ern eitremity resting on the river I'o ; and
is closing in upon the Austrian forces with
an energy and power that cannot be with

sitions where they would be out off by the
enemy. Home of the papers in this oountry
have been boyiah enough to follow the lead,
and to. declare that Napoleon's only object
waa to forestall rovolution in Italy and thus
rush it ; and that it was only to destroy
the supporters of liberty and their hopes
that he undertook the present war. Aa a
proof of their opinions they pointed to the
hasardou position of Oaribaldi, and the
danger from which the heroic valor of bis
follower could hardly rescue him. They
told ua that the King of Sardinia and his
army were made to take placea of extreme
privation and to bear the brunt of the battle,
while Napoleon kept out of the thickest of
the fight, and they reminded ng that the
skirmish at Montebello was not ao attack of
the French upon the Austrian, but an on
set of th Anstriana upon the French. They
triumphantly paradad thss facta as proofs
of both the cowardice of Louie Napoleon
and his determination to lure the choioeat
spirit of Italy to destruction. What posi.

late oontliot staring them in the faoe 1 will
the English still cling to the viewa whick their
