It wits prodietcd lost Spring tlint money would become plenticr as soon as wo oould hove a good crop. Aocounts from all parts ol the country represent tho wheat, oats, barley and oorn orops to bo above tho aver age, M'hcut and oorn has been, it is true, injured greatly by the frost in somo locali ties, but it is admitted that there is a lurpo surplus. The staples of the South, cotton and augur, also promise well; still money is scaroe and somo pretend to sny that it is career than ever. Tho cause of this scarcity does not seem to be understood. Young Amorica lives as fust as ever, and boasts of the vast resources of our country. Lie says that we iinva the best and groutcst variety of climate and soil the largest prairies, forests, lakes, rivers, mines of gold, silver, lead, coul, iron, and other minerals, in the world; that no na tion ever before made such rapid progress in civilization, wealth and population. Ho points exultingly to our large cities, church es, colleges, school houses, store houses, ho. tols, dwelling houses, and other improve ments in proof of tin's. Ho justly fools ( roud of tho noblo und heroic deeds of Washington, Franklin, .ledumon, Madison, Monroe, Ronton, Scott, Clay, Calhoun, Wob. ster and others, und asks: What country ever produced such mighty men and vast improve ments in so short a space of time? Young America inheriting freedom and a large cs stato from his ancestors, thinks that "Undo Sam is rich enough to give us nil n farm." Ho appears perfectly happy bo long as he has tho means to cat, drink, and bo merry, and says that this cry of hard times in con fined to tho laboring classes who nro nover satisfied. In this Young America is greatly mistaken. One reason why curronoy is so scarco is that exchango is ugninat us, and is likely to be so as long as Young Amorica wears costly foreign fabrics, drinks liquors, smokes cigars, and makes use of other arti cles that he had better disponse with, Tbe banks cannot safely isssuo more paper than coin in their vaults to redeem it with. Tho increased demand for noin in France and England is draining our country of tho precious metals, and the facilities afforded by rail roads for "sorters'' to return every dollar of our paper ourrcnoy for redemption in a very short time. This is now being dona. The products of our hardy California miners have all been shipped to Europe, and abou $20,000,000 besides, to pay our foreign in debtedness, This indebtedness has been inourred by railroads, and the eitravagauco of Young merioa, who thinks thero is no end to our wealth, and boundless resources He has been spoiled by coming into posses sion of too large an estuto. Ho has lived, and Is living too fast far beyond his inooraoi and it is high time for him to give up hia foreign luxuries, and husband his resources, or he will become a bankrupt, and end his days in a poor house. California gold has enabled us to build Railroads and improve our country, but our foreign debt is also increased, and it must paid. Young America had better rely mora upon the lubor of his own hands, on our farms, in our workshops, in our munus factories, and in our iron mines, and loss upon tha gold of California, lor cur national prosperity. He must become a producer as well as a consumer, and consume less than he produocs if he expects to pay his honest debts, and hand down to poxterily, unim paired, the estate which he inherited from hia noble ancestors. It is true that wo can boast nf having the largest public domain; tho most productive soil; tho richest mines; the largest rivers and lakes, and a variety of climata that produol es all tbe grains, fruits, aud vegetables of tho Northern as well as Southern latitudes but the resources of all theso may be squan) dered by paying tribute to foreign countries, and we now begin to feel the effects of Young Araorica's extravagance. It is time that we become more self.reliant, more in. dustrious and economical, and less depend' ent upon foreigners and foreign productions, or it will shortly require all tho produce of our great resources to pay the interest on our S.
