The very diaagree- able weather, together with the sloppiness of the streets, rendered it uncomfortable for pea destrisne, and detened a great number, no doubt, from visiting the Fair. Nolwithstandv ing all this, howsver, quite a large and eppres ciative assemblage of ladiea and gentlemen greeted the fair projectora of this meritorious enterprise with their presence, all of whom seemed well plessed with the entertainment. The articles on exhibition are quite numerous, ell selected and very attractive. Among them are to be found a lot of fine jewelry, a large collection of handsome books, comprising msny populsr and useful works, several beau tiful pieces of confectionery, and an endless variety of toys, Ac. And not the least notices able among the array of good things, is the collection of manufactured artiolea, the work of the pupils of the Sisters of Oharity'a school, which comprises many beautiful specimens of needle. work, embroidery, etc. The refreshment department is also well furnishsd With the good things of the season. In a word, the en tertsinment bas been well gotten op, and can not fail to please and elicit tha admiration of all who may visit it. It will open to-night with additional attrac tions, as it is the intention of the msnsgers to sdd a number of interesting "fixings" to ths present collection. We sdrise all who deaire to procure Holiday presents and at the aame time erjoy a rich vocal and Instrumental mu sical treat, and apend aa evening generally agreeable, to visit Huston Hall to night. HO, Main atreet, to nightl "Better than a show I" Will oure you certain! Ool Sruaious kouir. Certain persons hereabouts who have a supply of uncurrent and spurious money, are engaged on market mornings in passing it upon those who bsve poultry, pro duce, Ac, to sell. A good deal of spurious money bas been passed upon farmers aud oth erslstely, and the perpelrstors manage to etcape oa account of the lameness of the statute on ths subject. Could not the ehsin .gang system be made to work upon such eases? IT A gentleman ssid to a lsdy on Ssturdsy last "Can you tell me what such horrible weather aa this ia for?" "It is doubtless de signed," she replied, "to make us properly es timate the blessing of fair weather, and leach us to ba thankful therefor." A very proper reply. We csn't imsgine whst other good could be compssaed by such execrable weather as that of Saturday laat. IT The weather of yesterday snd to-day ia spoken of aa "unpleasant," bul when compared with that of Saturday, we call it delightful. We ssw ssvsral sleighs out yesterdsy, and too day the atreets sre resounding with the jingling of the bells. Tbs prospect ia good for more snow or rain, " Wkixlt Revixw." A naw psper, with this title, bss just made its appearance. It ia "de voted to Ihe interests of all mankind," and ia sirculated gratuitously. It ia filled with inter eating reading matter, and holiday advertise meuta. The second number will appear next Saturday. IT The negro cburcb, en Ludlow atreet, near tha old grave yard, waa dedicated yesterday. The editor of the Cincinnati Commercial writes from Wsshington, that la bis judgment it will not do to treat the disunion sentiment ss a trivlsl thing, but tbst it is a faot, and one that portends a dark and troubled period In onr history. All observing and thinking man must admit that Hslstesd is right. The question is so lorger "Will the Union be diaaolvedt" but How can the Colon be preserved?" ' Move Over. A New Tbibo A Good Tuna a The best pump now in use Is Quinn's Portsbls Sub merged Force Pump. In addition to being the best pump in nee, it is a complete and perfect ly reliable Fire Engine. With a short boss snd pipe it may be used for a variety of useful purs poses, such as watering gardens, yards, Ac, or washing windows, csrrisges or pavements. This pump is invaluable to farmers, and per sons living In country towns and villages, whsrs there sre no fire engines, aa a large and constant stream of water ean be thrown from it on any part of an ordinary three or four story building, and thua extinguish a fire. And in a city liks ours, this pump would bs of great value, for by its means much valuable prop erty might often be saved before our engines could bs brought to plsy on a fire. No person whose property is lisble to take fire should be without one of these pumps. With one of these pomps in his well, our unfortunstc fellow citisen, Col; T. J. S. Smith, could certainly have extinguished tha fire in his dwelling, be fore the engines arrived on the ground, and thus have prevented the disaatroua conflagra tion, and ssved his dwelling, with its vsluable contents. It is slso the test fmf for rsilrosds, distilleries, Ac, aa well as for foroing water wherever it ia wanted. It ia warranted never to freese or get out of order, two desirsble qusl ities in this pump, in addition to its other val uable qual itiea. We can recommend it to onr citixens as tha ntplutullrt in the pump line. An experienced pump maker in this city pro. nounces this the best force pump of which he has any knowledge, ss it ii also the mostsim pie, durable snd cheapest. Our fellow citixen, E. Lindsly, is tha agent for ths sale of this desirsbls pump. U- E. O'Brien, 300, Second St., we are gUd to learn ia improving in health fast. When the suite becomes sufficiently interested in such a pro ject, it is probable that the Journal's eorrespon. dent will be gratified. In the meantime, he might possibly obtain some light upon a sub ject whose darkness seems to oppress bim, by applying at one of the "Republican Clubs" in stituted in the city. Their facilities for impar ling general knowledge are, we are told, far greater than the demand; and that portion of the public, not included in the democratic party, need not go begging where papers and docu ments are awaiting readers, ITT Ladies and gsntlemen who desire to sup ply themselves with jewelry, watches, Ac, at their own prices, will note the advertisement of Assignee's Ssle, in anothsr column. It will commence thie evening in tha Phillips House, next door to Lussier's, and continue every after noon and evening this week.
