In crossing Waugosbanco point lie lost his way. anJ had considerable tiflicnlty iu getting Lone. From the amount of mi pi lie that have bren received this fall, it !? evident that the merchants of Chetoyg:n do not in tend that the citizens of this county shall suffer for lack of provision?. The great question would 5e m to be where sale could be found for such imuiemc quan tities? Tlu Halifax award of $",500.006 is to be paid by our government to-day, the ay upon which the limit fixed by the treaty expires. As this closes the partic ular matter involved, and, as it cannot be re-opened, the elaborate controversy on the merits of the award carried on by Mr. Evarts ceases to have wry much in terest. From the Little Traverse Independent we learn that work has been suspended on the extension of the Grand Rapid & Indiana nil road to Crooked lak,- for the season. The grade Is completed to the outlet of Round lake, only a mile or So irotn the intended terminus. Work will be resumed curly in the spring, and a month's work will stifflce to prepare It lor the iron. Jired Diagram I building a new dock on tl e strait. cbout ten miles above this place. The settlers are makii g market! improvements and it will no! le Ions iH-lorfiid will among the niot t!oiiriLinx sections of our county. Col. II. G. IXivls, thU wet k, surveyed n new road between towns thirty eight and iLir'y-iiitie, threfc west, through to Emmctt county. There is now a road open between towns thirty-seven and thirty eight. We are glad to note this deposition upon the part of settlers to open up roads in the new settlement. Tlse Tribune?' lia' tiffed hU upon them as being among tho mot important works to be done. The citizens of Che boygan, and especially our merchants, aro much Irteresttd in having these roads opened up, uid should do all they can to encourage the settlers ill doing' so. Every jsectibn.ot this county shoul l hi made uibutary to Cheboygan, nd the way to do it is to open up roads. Pctoskey and Little Traverso aro agi tating the subject of being incorporated. Mrs. J. W. Lindermans select schoo1 was closed on Saturday last, with very pleasing exercises. Col, R. C. Duryea- and wife left on the Cbamplain this morning lor Detroit, on their way to Brooklyn. We should judge that there was a barrel of apples brought in this fall for every man, woman and child In the county. Notwithstanding -the wretched con dition of the road from 'this place to Pe toskey, the mail ! coi.Miuucs to arrive in pretty good season. Fitch R. William?, formerly State Sen ator from this district, was a candidate for prosecuting attorney in Antrim coun ty, and got badly defeated by his Green back opponent. The Lansing Republican says the snow in Northern Michigan is so Jeep that lumbermen are drawing logs. That deep snow must be considerably north of Che boygan. Plenty 'bt uitill here, but no snow. The ladies of the Congregational church propose giving an entertainment during next week for ti e benefit of the church fund. Due notice of time, place and character of the entertainment v ill be given. Capt, Hamilton, in his account of the loss of the schooner Bei.tlcy, printed elsewhere, gets somewhat mixed up. He speaks of "Robert's island." between which and the main shore the straits ire only two miles wide." The ladies rf the Episcopal society gave an oyster supper Thursday evening at the residence of the Misses Brckes. The attendance was good, the oysters superb, and a good time was enjoyed. The receipts were some: hing over twenty dollars, The concert last Tuesday night at the Town Hall, for the benefit ot Prof. Weber, was not so well attended as it deserved, and financially wa3 not a suc cess. Those present enjoyed the erter tniiimenr, :ind that they appreciatelthe efforts of those taking pait was shown by the liberal applause given after each piece. According to Supervising Inspector General Dumout's annual report, there were forty-seven accidents to steamers resulting in a lo-s cf lile.dnritig the past year, and th at ol the 200,000.000 ot per sons canied on steamboats, only one per son and one tenth in each million were lost. This would indicate that traveling br steamboat- was about a3 s ife as any. Next Thursday is the day appoii ted by both President Hays and Governor Crosw ell. as a day of thanksgiving. Ser vices will bo held at the Methodist church in lite morning, to which all are Invited. In the evening a meeting will be held especially for the beuctit of chil dren, and the service will consist of sing ing and short addresses. It is to be hoped that as many ot the old children as possible will make it convenient to at tend and enjoy the inceiiug. The ladies of the Congregational church are preparing to give a grand fair for the benefit of the church. They have taken hold of the matter with a de tei initiation to make it a success. Full details as to time, place and arrange ments Will be given as soon as dt-finately arranged. Suffice to S'.y our citizens may safely calculate on hav.ng an inter esting time, and at the same time aid the l.-.d'es in liquidating the debt ot the church. Make your caIuc!.itions to pa tronize them liberally. Destructive Volcanoes. A Panama dispatch says: Advices from Salvadore state that the volcanoes of l.aleo and Santa Ana are in a state of tremeueous activity. On the latter from four or live distinct openings; five, smoky and ashes are routing lorth iu volumes. It is noi known that these are distinct, but they are supposed to be apertures in the old crater ol '.he volcano, wlrch has been silent for some years. For miles a I'.miid ashes are tailing, and the ti e air is tilled with smoke, darken ing tLc day and making the scene look gloomy and terrifying. The inhabitants in the neighboring villages sue terribly alarmed, and many have fljd to places ofsafety." Editor Nokihkrx Tribute : Dear Sik: In an article published in the Tribune, Nov. It CUeboyffaii County. The following in regard to Cheboygan county, we rind in the first number of the Michigan Homestead: "By reason of its great natural resources and its com manding commercial position. Cheboy gan is destined to become one of the first counties ol the State. 'Its harbors lie invitiiily near to the thoroughfare of the lakes, while its wonderful chain of inland waters with their actual and contemplated improvements, opens near ly every town to navigation. The land is roll'ng and the soil generally a sandy loam mixed with clay. The sand ol this region, says State Geologist Winchcll, in one of his reports, is derived from cal careous rock and not from sandstone. The most sandy soils, therefore, possess an in xhanstable element of fertility in the lime with which the soil U saturated, and must continue to be supplied aa the calcareous pebbles undergo a slow dc composition. Tho strength of tho soil in the sandy regions as well as iu the others Is demonstrated by the growth of sugar maple, beech, elm and basswood timber with the country is covered. Set tlements have existed for a lon; time in the northern part of tho county and along the shores of Burt's and Mullett's lakes, but within the last few years the tide of immigration has set in that cirec tion, and the wild lauds are being taken up rapidly all over the county. 0 Reception to IS. G. Ilorr. An informal reception was tendered tfve Hon. R. G. Ilorr, Congressman elect from s-Ui-Jistricf, and estimable wife last Monday evening by their numerous friend in East Saginaw. The Herald says : The aff dr was got ten up by a lew of the gentleman's per sonal friends, and was what it was in tended to be, purely informal no dress or kid glove affair, everybody going for the express purpose of enjoying them selves and having a good timt. To enumerate all in attendance would lake too much space, so we refrain; suffice to say that upward ot 150 participated in the festivities of the occasion. About ten o'clock a supper, consisting of coffee cake, sandwiches, etc., was served, of which the guests partook with a hearty zest after which they sought to amuse themselves in a manner to suit each oth er, scattering all over the spacious man sion. In one corner you culd find a group engaged in conversation on on the current topics of the da', in another were i number enjoying themselves by play ing on a piano and with vocal -music, whilst up stairs a 1 rge room was cleared and the young folks, and here and there some ot the old folks, tripped the light fantastic toe. Take it all in all it was one of the most brilliant affaire of the sea son." A not lie r Advertisement Abroad The Adrian Times of the 1 III) contain ed the proceedings of a meeting of trie Lenawee County Farmers' club. The following extract from the official repot t of the proceedings explain' itself: "After reading the minutes of the last meeting, the Secretary showed to the club a very large specimen of the Mo hawk variety of pota:o s wh'ch he ie ceived from Hoi .
