W..E. Smyth, j.r., of St. Jgnaco, spent "Wednesday here. Oscar Adams left for a short visit to Flint Tuesday morning. James F. Moloney has been spending several days in Detroit this week. W. II. Scott, and wife returned from Rochester, N. Y., Wednesday evening. E. II. Sager, of Burt Lake was down on business this wee and reported all lovely up there. Rev. W.M. Campbell spent several days in Bay City this week going down Tuesday and returning yesterday. N. Biddle, who is to act as clerk on the Van Raalto the coming season ar rived from St. Ignace Monday. Prof. Lowrie will leave next Monday for a brief visit .to his former home, Adrian, lie will return on Saturday. Dr. J. B. Patterson, of Rogers' City has been up this week visiting old friends. Geo. McAuley, who lias been spending the winter here, left Tuesday for New Mexico. His wife remains here for the present. 0. M. Clement started for a trip to Marquette and other upper peninsula points Wednesday. He expects to be gone a couple of weeks. 1. E. DeGowin returned from his visit to his old home in New York state Satur day. He reports having had a splendid time during his absence. Alex. Ranville, who sailed the Mary last season, and who is to captain the City of Cheboygan the coming season came over from Mackinac Monday. -Alfred Noble, Esq Gen'l. Supt. St. Mary's Falls Canal and several of his assistants, passed through here on the train Thursday on their way to the Sault. Hon. II. W. Seymour, passed through here on his way home from Lansing on Tuesday evening. He reports that the special session of the legislature was a lively one. J. Sherwood, of Lapeer, spent "Wednes day here looking over the town to see what the prospects for picture business were and now thinks of coming back in a short time and engaging in the drug and stationary business. At the Congregational church tomorrow evening the pastor, Rev. A. II. Lowrie, will lecture on "Books and Reading." Young people are especially invited. The Van Raalte expects to start on her first trip to Manistiqne ns soon as the first of April which will bo about six weeks sooner than she got started last year. McArthur. Smith & Co. have about completed their invoice and closed up the books or their lumber business for the past year. They show a very success ful year's business. OThe railroad company is negotiating with McArthur, Smith & Co. for more river front, but it is not certain yetjthat they will secure it as the firm have need of what tney nave Jelt. The steam ferry Algomah has made regular trips all the week up to this morning when she was unable to cross on account of the ice drifting into the passage from the south. The St. Ignace Republican started on its second year a full-fledged 'newspaper that is all printed at home. Bro. Bissell is to be congratulated upon the success that has attended the publication under his management. The McArthur, Smith & Co. dock un der the management of Mr. Johnson, is being prepared for the opening of navi gation which will soon be at hand. By the time the boats are hero Mr. Johnson will be ready for them. Mrs. Rabideau, mother of Mrs. Robert Robinson, died Thursday evening, about 5 o'clock, aged 05 years. The cause of her death was a tumor in her stomach. For two months she has not been able to eat anything, and her sufferings have been very severe. . J. D. Smith Is making arrangements to clear, plough and put into crops three hundred acres of land near Strongville, Chippewa county. It is unnecessary to say that there is very little clearing to ue done on the land, as it is in me fa mous "burnt tract." Dr. 0. B. Weed leaves next Tuesday for Charlevoix where he will locate for the practice of his profession and with his brother engage in the drug business. The many friends of the Doctor will re gret his leaving and we can assure our neighbors that in him they will secure a reliable business gentleman. , W. Chandler has purchased fifty-two feet front on Main street nearly opposite the store of Wetmore & Paddock, of J. L. Ford and the new Tribune building will bo erected on that location, instead of on the lot in the Central House square as was. first intended. The change in location was made to secure more frontage, as in the last named lo cality Mr. Chandler had only twenty six feet front.
