Slyflold' of Point Aux-Bec-;ies lighthouse, has resigned, and his ni Edward has been appointed his suc nor. Mr. S. is a veteran in the light b use employ, having been constantly it for thirty years. He first took the 1 South Manitou Island light in 1852. i t was a very rickety, poor concern, and it is mainly through his efforts and under his supervision that the new towor was built in 1858. While on the Island light he, in several instances, assisted in saving lives from wrecks, among them the crews of the brig J. W. Scammon and the schr. Wm Aldrich, in early years. He took charge of Point Aux-Bec-Scie9 (Betsy) light twenty-one years ago last September, and has faith fully kept a "light in the window" for our storni-tossed craft, and it seems to be appreciated by some. The propeller Fontain City, Captain Gibson, never fails to salute "Point Betsy". She has done so for the past twenty years on her trip up and dowu from Buffalo to Chi ago and return. Old age and failing health have at last induced him to resign. We all unite in saying, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." His successor, Ed. Slytield, was boru in, and always lived between the walls of a light station, and no doubt will prove i worthy keeper. point Betsy is one of the most import .i i ;t in the lakes, and all vessels J;u dug Chi ac: for the lower lake ports 'or this light, and : ark for the straits ... . aght ' r one, and the building is ;ei Id, and a new, powerful li -' and fog-station are much m -Chicago Inter Ocean.
