CSmyth & Co., the enterprising jewel ers and stationers, Dome out witli a new advertisement this week. Fexer's holiday announcement con tains a vast amount of information. It can be found in another column. 0. M. Clement, the boot and shoe deal er, will have an interesting advertise ment in next week's issue. Look out for it. Charles Southam did the inside paint ing of Post & Van Arsdale's new store room and it shows forth his handy work in other words "It speaks for itself." Read the new advertisement of L. P Limpert in this issue. Mr. Limperf has a very fine stock of watches, jewelry, &c. which will well repay any one to exam ine, The railroad trains are still way off of time notwithstanding ihe persistent ef fort to keep the track clear with snow plows, the immense snow drifts between Cheboygan and Staudish makes dim cult work. So far 23 inches of snow is the amount of the "beautiful" this section has been favored with. South of us they have had a much greater quantity. Last Saturday at the foot of Black lako it was twenty-eight inches deep on the level We acknowledge the receipt, from the bereaved family, of a copy of a neat me morium of the late W. S. George. It contains a brief but very interesting biographical sketch, which originally appeared in the Lansing Republican, and numerous tributes to the memory of the deceased from the press of the state. During the season of the steamer City of Cleveland made 08 round tripe from Detroit to St. Ignace, traveling 50,820 miles from April 17th to Decem- oer 3d. She burned 5,200 tons of coal, and her wheel turned 1,140,000 times. Her crew numbered 5. Her trips were made with remarkable regularity, and her popular officers did much to win favor with the public. We are glad to state that the work of sinking the tesi salt well is progressing more favorably than it has for months past. They are now down to a depth of 775 feet and the rock has changed to a much more favorable character and is standing up well, with every indication that it will continue to do so. The depth now reached is considerably deep er than that attained at the former at tempt, when it was abandoned. Those in charge feel confident that their great est trouble is over. Should this prove to be the case, it will not take many weeks to decide as to whether salt can be obtained or not W. (1. Doggs expects to receive a car load of family groceries to-day, which will be ottered for sale at the old Becker stand, first door north of the post-oflice. I lie New I .inc. The Detroit Dry-Dock Company has contracted to build a propeller for the Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Rail road Company, which will be the first of a line of large propellers to run in c m nection with the railroad between Qg densburg and Chicago through the new Wetland Canal. The new propeller will be a double-decker 212 feet in length over all, 8 feet beam, 18 feet hold, and S feet between decks. Her machinery will consist of a fore and aft compound en gine with cylinders 27 and 44 by 40, which will be supplied with steam from two steel boilers 8 feet shell by 16 feet in length, capable of sustaining a working pressure of 110 pounds to the square inch. In general appearance the boat will resemble the J. C. (iault, of the Wabash Line, and will be fitted with gangways for rolling freight. She will be so constructed as to carry 40,000 bushels of corn through the Welland Canal. Work on her will be commenced at once, and she will be out ready for business in May and June next. She will cost ovpr $100,)00. A new feature in ship building will be introduced in this boat in the way of an iron shelf. This shelf will extend over the frames, and be attached by angle iron to the iron strap which passes around ine snip i nnder the plankshear. This arrange-1 ment will lighten the boat considerably and at the same time be very strong.
