THE NORTHERN TRIBUNE. DECEMBER 23, 1882. ' Northern tribune. SATURDAY DECEMBER 23. 1S82. In the libel suit of Dr.Bathrick against the Detroit Post and Tribune the jury rendered a verdict of $2,500 for the plain tiff. The President nan accepted 250 miles of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, 200 miles of which is in Arizona, and fifty miles in the Indian Territory. Washington is astonished at ru mors current that a Justice of the Su preme Court lost several thousands in a gaming house, and only left the table when the proprietor refused to further honor his personal checks. The diligence of Congress this winter is in notable contrast with its wonted disposition to defer business from week to week, and its zeal in work and dis inclination to lose time by adjournment have become subjects of common com mendation. The Supreme court of the United States Monday morning rendered a decision in the political assessment case of N. L, Curtis. The constitutionality of the law under which Curtis was convicted is af firmed, and the petition for a writ of Habeas corpus denied. Through contracts will be made in January, for the star mail service, over 344,000 miles of routes, principally in the West and South, for which not over 100 bids have been received. The depart ment thinks the cause of the few bids is owing to the fact that not so much mon ey is in the business aow as formerly. ' A recent writer.says that there are two hundred and thirty-aefen chancea of being murdered in Rome to one in England. The latter country is said to be freest from homicides of any part of the world. There is only one murder to 178,000 inhabitants there, to 750 in Rome. These are the two extremes, as shown by statistics. The Republican Senators held a cau cus Saturday which was pretty general' ly attended. The object of the caucus was to take into consideration the holi day recess and future action on the ad mission of Dakota. The caucus was of the opinion that ten days was holiday enough, and that they ought to use their best endeavors to secure the admission of Dakota. &i a meeting! the Geographical So ciety in Paris, M. De Lessees promised that the Panama canal woUM oe ready to be opened in 1888. He described tho health of the employes as satisfactory, and stated the rate of mortality in Pan ama did not exceed that in France. The fears that the canal would be liable to destruction by earthquakes are unfound ed. ' The Postmaster General has issued an order Upon the report of the Postoftice inspectors throughout the country, de claring over 240 marriage, birthday, and cooperative insurance Companies fraud ulent and has sent circular letter con taining the names of such associations to all postmasters, with instructions to withhold money orders and registered letters addressed to these parties. r.nni-nvK S. ORTH.memberlof Congress from the 9th Indiana district, died at his home in Lafayette, at 11 o clock Saturday night. Mr. Orth was born in Lebanon, Pa., April 22, 1817, wa educat ed at Gettysburg college. He served two terms in the Indiana state senate, and altogether seven terms in Congress. He was also United States minister to Vienna during Grant's administration. Thk Shipping Commission has com pleted a billand reported the same to Congress rjcommending some changes in the marine laws, which if adopted will be of great benefit to our lake marine. It abolishes all tonnage dyes on American craft trading between American ports and Canadian. Hereto fore they have been obliged to pay an annual tax of thirty cents per ton meas urement. It also reduces the marine hospital tax from forty cents per month to twenty cents. There is a large sur plus in the Marine Hospital fund and it is only justice to seamen that the tax should be reduced. COME ONE ! Come All !
