May 15th, 1883 It appears from our freezing nights that winter is determined to linger in the lap of spring, and the farmers here are ready to kick him out. A sneak thief entered the tent of Mr. Bteo&foa, who is looking land for the Dodge & Phelps estate, of N. Y., and stole many little valuables, cut the tent up badly, and left, but was tracked so as to be nearly loeated. A large crew of men passsd through here to-day enroute for Rainy River drive. The lingering illness of Miss Libbie Sandison was terminated on Monday morning last by her quiet and peaceful departure to the loving arms of Jesns, who was waiting for her just over the way. We feel that our loss is her eter nal gain. The family and friends ho severely stricken with grief have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire com munity. We learn that th-i Pastor from the Baptist Church of Cheboygan will be here to preach at the funeral services. It is quite difficult to get the mail regularly to and from the Post Office here to Cheboygan. We expect a semi weekly mail from Indian River to Rogers City by this office after July 1st. The City of Cheboygan on Black Lake promises to bo a great advantage to us in getting to the city of Cheboygan n the straits. S. WOLVERINE. Jacob Shook was in the village this week and informed us that Wolverine is improving rapidly. The machinery for a new shingle mill being built, is on the ground, and the parties expect to have it running next week. -The new saw mill has the boilers set and arches and will be in full operation soon. Mr. Ballard's new store is completed and open with a large stock of goods. Miss Rosa Lyons, of Cheboygan, is teaching school very successfully, giving good satisfaction to all. Many new buildings are going up, and the country around being cleared and rapidly settled. KT. IGNACE. Republican' County Clerk Biddle suf fering with rheumatism. Too much fast driving in the city Mr. Church, of Church's landing on Sault river, passed through the city Thursday of last week on his way to Detroit to be treated for a cancer on his neck. Twenty-two saloons in the city. Sheriff sold out three men last week. -Hon. C. R. Brown returned after an absence of two months. The city is deficient in sidewalks, City Treasurer Burt reports a balance of $3, 647.07 iu the treasury. Recent rains have raised the streams and drives were moving nicely. The Mackinac Lumber k).'s mill started up Monday of last week, and is cutting 80,000 feet per day. Brooks Hazeltou expects to leaye in July for the goutJl. Free Press Foley, the jeweler, has re ceived his new safe. - The band is going to give an excursion to the Sault during the summer. The marshal was around notifying people to clean up in front of their property. A gale. Wednesday night of last week, demoralized a pile driver and did other damage. The American Lumber Co.'s store, at Dollar ville robbed of several hundred dollar's worth of goods. -The city seal represents the monument of Marquette with an aboriginee kneeling at ihe foot. A .meeting was called to discuss the ques tion of water works, but no one had foresight enough to arrange for the hall and the people assembled on the side walk, could not get in and cussed more thau they discussed. A signal is now raised on the postoffice when the mail arrives. HARBOR BPBI50& Independent.- Petoskey dealers over looking for stores. Harbor Point mana gers putting in an appearance. North Star began running to i'etoskey last Saturday, but can only land when the bay is calm, for want of a dock at the lat ter place. -Petoskey freight landed at Harbor springs from boats, cannot land at former plare. Thursday of last week tidal waves swept into the bay raising the water three or four feet. Thinks that if a sand lot at Harbor Point k is worth $2,500 the whole property worth not less than $100,000 and calls the at tention of the supervisor to the fact. $2,500 is what they ask the government for room to build a light house. Man agers of Harbor Point Association think twenty-five or thirty cottages will be built this season. The band boys are still trying to secure new clothes in the may of a uniform. Republican Representative Canby flpent last Sunday at home. Numerous weddings this spring. New cross-walks being put down. Several new cottages and a depot to be built this season at Wequetonaing. With this week's issue the Republican closes its seventh vol ume and shows evidence of prosperity. -Prospects of the village were never bright or. building matters rushing. PETOSKEY. Democrat Mr. Johnson, of Cheboygan is erking at the Occidental. Moslier Brothers expected to start their mill last Monday. Have a good stock of logs. Editor rose says he saw several snow banks along the railroad between Macki naw and I'etosikey. while on his way home from Cheboygan last week. New bridge is being being built over Bear creek, on Mitehell street. The ouilding of the dock seems to hang fire, greatly to the loss of the town, and danger of loseingfsome of the cribs already in, the shore end reported moved six feet by the seas washing in. Record Improvements being made in the cemetery. -Several citizens are mak ing notable and attractive improvements about their homes. Quite a number of visitors from Indianapolis, Ind., promis ed for this summer. Steamers land freight at the outer end of Rose's dock, and then freight and passengers are brought ashore in small boats. Kan CHMtcllo's ov Circa. Geopge Fax returned last Saturday evening from his brief visit to Canada. Harry W. McArthur has removed from Fargo to Keystone, Dickey county Dakota. S. B. Grummond was on the Atlantic Tuesday. He came up to look 'brer his recent purchase at Maekinac. Rev. A. W. Wkstc.ate, of Alpeha, ar rived on the Atlantic Tuesday for a brief visit. He preaches at the Congregation al church to-morrow, morning and eve ning. D. B. Austin left Monday morning for Grand Rapids. Mr. Austin, during his residence in Cheboygan, made many warm friends, all of whom regret his de parture. WM. Hess returned on the Van Raalte last Monday from Sailors Encampment, on Sault river, where he had been setting up the boilers he manufactured for Shortreed & Murray. Dr. Hartley left on the Flora yester day for Alpena, and will occupy the pul pit of the Congregational church iu that city to-morrow, having arranged with A. W. Westgate for an exchange for the day. Henry Clothier, of Rogers City, was in the village yesterday.
