THE NORTHERN TKIBUNlU FEBRUARY 14. 184. 5 H I Tho Ipplan Way. Th Appian Way was the great eomh rn road from Homo, leading through Capua to Urundusiura, and was built S12 1J. C. The manner of its bulking showed that the ancients understood the art, and their method of construc tion might bo adopted to-day. They cut two parallel furrows to indicate its width, and then they removed the earth till they came to the hard bottom, and began construction with sand. It was paved with stone, the hardest that could be found, which, alter being smoothed and polished, were cut in cor responding angles so as to bite together In jointures without the intervention of copper or any other metal to bind them, making a perfec'tly smooth road which over two thousand years of the heaviest kind of wear has not broken or materi ally injured. To-day the road is smooth and good, and will be for ages. The famous road was constructed by Appius Claudius, and it has immortal ized him. The "Appian Way" will be known after the deeds of Caesar aro for gotten, and which is as it should be. Appius did something for the men and mules of all time. This is a hint for some American who is thirsting after inimortality. Let him build a good road from somewhere to somewhere, and get his name tacked upon it. The "SmTthian Way" would be more endur ing than a lath and plaster female sem inary or a seat in Congress. It is a narrow street, but as vehicles may pass without interference, it is wide enough. However, it is a depressing road, and one which one having no business but the investigation of the ancient, does not care to pass over but once. Every foot of it is sacred to the memory of some man or event, and it is lined its whole length with tombs or rather the ruins of tombs. It was the favorite place to bury the great dead, or rather along its length were built the tombs which were to embalm their memories "forever. "Forever!" How little men who have the insane notion of living in memory forever" comprehend the meaning of the word! Thousands of men prominent in their day died expecting to bo re membered "forever," and imposing tombs were built to hold their ashes, and inscriptions upon them record their names and deeds, and after a lapse of two thousand years all that is left of them is a mass of ruins which travelers punch about with their canes, after which they go back to their hotels and read up their histories, or pretend to, in the guide book. "Forever", is a long time. It is better to live for the immediate present, for the "forever" is unattainable for the greatest. There were forgotten Napoleons and Ctcsars long before tha Appian Way was built, ana there are Ca sars and Napoleons coming who will take the place of those whom we now worship. As children are being born every day, and always will be, immortality is rather a difficult thing to achieve. Time ha3 been roll ing on, time will roll on, and time Is a great cngulfer. It will wear out the greatest deeds and swallow up the vastest renown. Yet there aie those who, with their eyes turned toward posterity, feel good at being elected to a State Legislature, and many men take great pride in being made Secre tary of a county political convention. A B. Locke, in Toledo Blade. Tho Use of Coat's Milk. "Is It true." asked a reportei oi a well-known physician in Thirty-eighth street, "that girls are now drinking goats' milk to improve their com plexions." "Undoubtedly," said the physican promptly; "and it is also true that they are Indulging in lettuce juice, asses' milk, cream, elvcorine, camphor, poultices, .arsenic, patent nostrums of every variety and chemical masks. "You don't say P" Yes, I do. They try everything on earth except tho fundamental requisite. I have had an extensive experience in treating cases of skin trouble with wom en, and am still surprised at tho ease with which they are fooled by all sorts of quack medicines and devices. Last iSDrins: I had a eirl under treatment .h whose stomach was almost ruined. She . had been taking an infernal compound Bold by a firm in Fourteenth street which was expected to make her arms plump! She was not an idiot either. Another patient of mine excited my ire a short time ago. She was the most spook-1'.ke and ghastly-looking specimen I ever saw. Her skin was a dead white, and her eyelids wero crusted and violcn Jy red. She was quite satisfied with" her color or lack of it but wanted mo to take awnv the color from her eyelids. I frightened her into co ife.sing that she had been consuming quantities of a com pound said to have been stolen from one oi the beauties of tho bultan s narcm, and then began to clear her blood, "lkitdu you think goat's milk im proves the complexion?" " My dear sir, don't you understand that none of these things improve the complexion dircctlyP It m:iy bo possi ble to improve tho general health so much by the use of goats' milk that tha complexion is benefited, but that will only follow whore goats' milk U suited to the system. Very many people don't drink nlilk at all. Rubbing the milk on the face is the wildest sort of folly. will tell vou how every woman who reads tho Sun may get a good color-- by systematic exercise, regular meals. and seven hour3 sleep every nignt. Sound) kind of ancient, doesn't itP'' "ALttle jaded." "Well, it's the only receipt known to us, and it will never fail. Let any woman try it for herself vnd see." N. l Sun. A.
