Ryan and wife of Sandusky, spent four days In Cheboygan last week. There will be some interesting races at the Driving Tark Saturday of next week. . The transmitter In W. & A. Meirthur's store was burned out by lightning last Thurday nieht. A quantity of hardwoed, lumber and shingles were shipped on prop. Messen ger to Chicago last Sunday. No. thirty seven in the central office switch board was bured out by light ning last Thursday night. C. R. Smith arriyed home last Sunday morning on the Messenger having tak en the round trip to Chicago. One of the men belonging to the side show opposite Todd's store was arrested Saturday for assault and battery. The steamer Pearl made her last trip Sunday. She will be taken from this route and used as an excursion boat out of Detroit. Frank Queen's side show pulled up stakes Monday morning and he pitched his tent at Mackinac Island where he reaped a haryest last Tuesday. The propoller Messenger took on a piano at Chicago last week for the bene fit of her passsngars, and there is music in the air on that popular craft. The concert to given unber the auspi ces of the Ladies Independent Union will take place Tuesday evening, July 29 and promises to be the event of the sea son. Tlio Village taxes are being paid with a degree of satisfaction on the part of taxpayers that is refreshing to witness. They appreciate the reduction of over one half. The siihooaera Sophia J. Lull and George Steele sailed Saturday for Chica go, but owing to the blow of Sunday they were at anchor at Mackinaw City Monday morning. Died, at Indian River, July 14th, Mrs. Anna Martin, wife of J'. E. Martin, aged thirty years two months and fourteen days. Mr. Martin has the sympathy of many friends in Cheboygan. The inspectors of boilers and Lulls struck Cheboygan in a good time last Sunday, as the Van Raalte and Mary were both inspected and pronounced seaworthy in every respect. Messrs Dodge and Cowan local inspec tors of hulls and boilers for this district arrived in CheboyganQSaturday evening and remained nntil Tuesday morning. During their stay they inspected several steamers. Capt. Boushard says the Messenger made the run from Milwaukee to Chi cago last trip in 6 hours and 15 minutes, which is within 5 minutes oX the prop. Rose formerly of the Big Rap ids Pioneer, who has recently been serving as'postal clerk on a railroad in Texas, has been transferred by a recent order of the department, to the Grand Rapids and Indiana railroad. Mr. Paris, tha mail carrier between Indian River and Rogers City, was com pelled to come by the way of Cheboygan on account ef theibridge over Pigeon River being carried away. He expected to arrange for two teams, one on each side of the break, until the bridge is rebuilt. . The first of the week, a negro stole a gold watehjand ajlot of Jewelry from a lady guest at the Mercier house, Mack inaw City. Sheriff Harrington tele graphed the authorities at Port Heron, and received a telegram to-day that his man had been arrested (with all the Taluablesnpon him. The Sheriff leaves to-night to bring him up. Persons desiring to leave Cheboygan to take the morning train south on the G. R. & I. railroad, and not wishing to atop oversight at Maekinaw City, can do so by taking the Van Raalte at this port en Monday, Wednesdsy or Friday mornings. Capt. Brown makes good connection with the train fnouth every trip, andverybodr is sure of courteous treatment on the Van Raalte. It was moat impossible to work the telephones last Thursday night during the Ore on east side owing to lightning. Captain Boynton and wife accompan ied by Mrs. Pauly, of St. Ignace, were guests of Mr. nnd Mrs. C. W. Farr at Grand Central last Thursday. It has been decided to build a brick school house in place of the one destroy ed last Thursday night, ever one thous and dollars has already been raised. Mr. Spear who was dry goods clerk for S. Legault & Son two years ago, is spending a tew days in eur town. He has been attending college at Hillsdale. Butler made himself understood as he always does because he says something when he talks. The Democratic party succeeded in expressing itself on the tariff in a way calculated to mean what ever one interprets the "straddle," be cause this dodging party "only" studies to say something that means nothing and always succeeds. . The Cadreau Brothers, of Mackinaw Island, the worthy recipients of the handsome' and valuable gold .medals presented them by the government, for their heroic efforts in rescuing the Spectacle Reef light houso keepers last full, are heroes by nature. Our fellow townsman Andrew Rapin says ho has known them from infancy and while a resident of Mackinaw was an eye wit ness to a gallant rescue of a drowning child by one of the brothers, when a lad ef only eleven years of age. Mr. Rapin says thev were always fearless and took to water as naturally as a duck. lie re lates of their diving from the clocks of the Island, when they wore but boys, af ter dimes and half dimes, that visitors would throw into the lake where the water was twelvo or fourteen feet deep, and they never failed to secure their prize. Death mt John Mulvmyrb. A telegram this morning announces the death of John C. Mulvaugh at Detroit last night. This, although not unexpec ted, is sad news to his numerous friends in Cheboygan. The deceased was long a well known and successful business man of our village and was held in the high est esteem by all. The bereaved rela tives have the sympathy of the entire community. The body will arrive this evening and the funeral take place to morrow afternoon, at 3 o'clock fiom the Congregational church under the charge of the Masonic order. A Destructive Fire. On Thursday night during the rain storm the lightning, struck the Catholic School building and the structure was entirely consumed by fire in a short time. Being on the East side the fire men could not do anything to save the building. There should be cisterns constructed on the East side so as to be used in time of fire. The loss is pnt at $3,000. ' No Insurance. Already the energetic and popular Priest, Father DeSmidt, has begun to raise money to rebuild, and a brick school house will be erected as soon as possible. The School Hoard. The school board district No. 1 town ship of Benton, held a meeting Tuesday evening and organized by electing George VY. Bell, moderator; A. M. Gerew, Director, and T. T. VanArsdale, assessor. It was voted to employ W.L. Barr as principal, of the graded school, at a salary of eighty dollars per month, Miss. Libbie C. Hamilton as first assistant, at a salary of fifty dollars per month and Miss Jessie Shadbolt was retained in the intermediate department at thirty two dollars per month. The teacher for the grammar and first and second primary departments were not chosen. As assistant to Prof. Sutherland, Mr Barr demonstrated his ability and quail' fications for the positienof principal. He is thoroughly conversant with the work of the school, and the judgment of the board was that it was the best seleo tion that conld be made. ' Miss Hamil ton while in charge of the grammar department proved herself an excellent teacher .and by her fattbfallness well earned her promotion. She is one of the few teachers in the county possessed of a first grade certificate. Miss Shadbolt has srivea general satisfaction in the Intermediate department and has al ways worked for the interest of the sehoel.
