The Editor of the Vallnj enmmonts
upon the fact that we write pleasantly
and good humoredly. That is natural
with us ; but even if it were not, wc
would not have the conscience to add
one grain to the burden which our frit ml
now hears. II ? 11 ! rto >k to "go for"
a bashful speaker'at a pound party, and
that bashful speaker "pounded" the
Editor so severely thai his reaem
bianco to the boy, that undeitook to
fondle the hind foot of a mule, is easily
recognized. Our friend ni.iv not be so
Sind looking, but he has certainly
learned something.
Improvement.?Mt, Jackson is now
laying sidewalks. It is an improve?
ment which will add much to the ap?
pearance of the place and to the convi n
ience of citizens. E'linburg, Mt. Jack?
son, New Market and Strasl.urg are all
getting ahead* of Woodstock. Tfc
will w.-.ke up sometime ami surprise the
valley by having good sidewalks from
one end of town to the other. W ould
it not be well for our council to require
the sidewalks ou the middle tqaarra to
be grailed aud paved during the present
year? On the W? si side of the street.
there are only three Iota which have
not goo? I pivemeuts. On the East side
there are Out .o W, Decides the church
lot. The council could make arrange?
ments to have this improvement made,
at v? ry little coat. Wo hope they will
uot n*j-lt*t >t longer.
Opium Eaters.?The reporter of
the Haunton Vindicator visited the i
drug stores of Staunton and publishes a i
very interesting account of tho progress '
of this fearful habit of opium eating. ;
One drug store sold, in one year, 79
593 quarter grain doses of morphine.
Every store visited reported an iucrease 1
iu the habit aud all were desirous of i
some general legislation upon the sub?
ject. The efleets of morphine arc more
serious than those of the intemperate
use of whiskey. Parties addicted to
the habit will frequently lie aud steal in
order to gel it. Without it they arc
miserable. Iu this place there are but
lew opium eaters and we are glad to
learn that our druggists report uo in?
crease iu the number.
New Bridge.?The citizens of
e,Hiieksburg, Forestville aud surround?
ing county held a meeting at Quicksburg
on Wednesday January 23d, for the
purpose ot devising some plan for the
construction of a bridge across the
North Fork of the Shenandoah Riv
erat Mr. Sam'1 NetPs mill. Dr. J B.
S'.rayer delivered a very appropriate
address, presenting the advantages
which would result from the bridge aud
iu-ing the inauguration of energetic ef?
forts for its immediate construction.
The cost of the bridge is estimated at
12500.
Complimentary Banquet.?We
acknowledge the receipt of an invitation
to atteud on Thursday next, at the
"Grand Central Hotel" in Martinsburg,
W. Va., a graud complimentary ban?
quet given by the citizens of Berkeley
county to Col. J. y. A. Nadenbousch,
in testimony ot their appreciation of his
energy and public spirit in erecting in
Martinsburg such a large and fine hotel
as that of the "Grand Central," of
which he ia Proprietor.
We regret to learn that the dwelling?
house of Mr. Joshua Ely, near Inker
man. Hardy county, was ontirely de?
stroyed by fire with alibis household
goods on Tuesday list. How the fire
originated we are not advised.
Since writing the above we learn
that Mr. Lorenzo Walker, well known
by many of our citizens, who was resid?
ing with Mr. Ely, was so badly burned
in attempting to get aome papers out of
the burning dwelling, as to cause his
death on Wednesday night last.?.S'. B.

Death of a Minister.?Rev. John
(i. Wolf, pastor of the Reformed church
in this place from 1850 to 1858 died at
his residence in Lancaster Pennsylva?
nia, on Tuesday. Jauuary 22d. He was
an earnest and devoted Minister of the
I. His kind and genial manners
no less than his Christian deportment
attracted to him a warm circle of friends
He was aboul 76 years of age at the
time of his death.
For the Library.?Active efforts
are being put forth by the Young Meu's
Christian Association te secure funds
for the purchase of fifty or more vol?
umes of attractive reading to add to
their library. This is a matter that
well deserves the liberal aid of our peo?
ple. Nothing is more needed by our
community to give it greater moral and
social elevation than abundant inter?
course with good books. We do not
mean altogether religious books, for
many such are already in the library.
and are not the kind the committee
propose to purchase at present. Books
of Travels, Biography, and standard"
Fiction will first be secured as a germ
from which it is hoped iu time to rear
an extensive library.
To obtain the money for this purpose
there will be held at an early date a
festival and eiyster-supper, which we
trust will meet with the liberal patron?
age of the public. In the mean time
any funds for this worthy enterprise
?rill be gladly received by P. W. Magru?
der or IS. B. Schmitt. The Association
has not forgotten the liberal encourage- :
ment accorded it last summer, and!
would desire lo state that the bulk of
the money then tibtained has been ap- <
plied to the renewal of subscriptions lo
the various Magazines &c. to be found
in the readiug-room. What little re?
mains of that amount will be applied to
the cause now in baud- S.
The Receivership Of .he Bi.khy
vii.i.E Bank.?On Saturday last A.
Moore, Jr., who was on the 27th of
December elected by the stockholders ?
of the Bank of Berry ville its receiver, I
having received from the duly authorized |
agent of Um bank a deed conveying to
him the assets of the bank, together i
with the unexpired lease on the bank ?
building, called on the president of the j

had been placed in bis charge uutil a
receiver was appomtcd, and upon the
refusal of Major Moore to surrender the
keys, he proceeded to take possession of
the bank-bnilding by entering through
Um window. The motion to dissolve
the injunction granted by Judgo Page,
of the County Court, restrained Mr.
Moore from acting as receiver of the
bank, was argued before Judge Turner.
! of the Circuit Court, at Front Royal, ?u

the petition for a dissolution. On
Monday, while Mr. Moore was at work
in the bank, he was estopped from

granted by Judge Sherrard. of Winches?
ter. This case will be heard before
Judge Turner on Thursday, the 31st.?
