We see, then, that die man who wish

properly the ualuro of the soil be must
trace it buck to the rock, of whose sub
stance by the actiou of the sun, .the
wind, the frost, uuif tba rain, j crating
upon it through long ceoturies, tha fer

composed. Thus a ' kuowiedg'i i.f the
nature of both rock aiiJ tree is prima
rily valuable iu its relation to (he tirst
principle of good husbandry. It is
valuable, we repeat, but is not absolute
ly essential, for wo can continue to
farm as our grandfathers did, me, and
to raii-o good crops in a blind sort of a
way, without knowing anything of the
composition of soils or of that geboral
law which governs elike both animal
and vegetable life. We have no d oubt
that the old race of fanners were very
comfortable after their fahinn, and
those who desire to follow iu their foot
steps need not trouble themselves about
w hat they are pleaded to call "new fan
gled notions." To take thought as to
any improvement in agricultural pro
cesses may be to many men u worry
und the knowledge necessary to perfect
these processes a "vexatj.u of spirit,"
uad yet we respectfully submit, that
through this worry and vexutiou of
spirit all men must puss if they desire
to arrive at czeellcuce iu any dopurt
luent of life.
It was known ns fur bnck an the days
ofChaptal und iir Humphrey l'a.'y
that the fertility of a soil dupuuded nut
merely "u the preseuce in thu soil of
one or two leading" constituents, but in
tue fact that the soil cnutaiiitd all I he

to thu growth of plants. It was also
known that the chief . cf theso, nnd
more essential than any other, were
lime, (he phosphates and potash, and
also that iu a course of cropping, pot
iish and the phosphates, from thu lurger
drain ma do upni them, were of ail oth-

these elements of fertility our eai'.ier
tanners made havoc. They cultivated
the laud largely in hoed crops, such as
corn and tobacco ; they drew nfT every
thing fioni the soil and put on couipara

eventually they become bHiren. The
rule then that should g ivt rn, that dots
indeed govern our best farmers, is to
rcturu more plant food annually to the
noil than tho crops take from it. Uy
this system rucli lauds are yearly bo
coming richer iustoad of poorer, and
yield larger crops thsn they did when
tbey were at their highest itiut of nat

make lands rich economically that is
to bay, without u waste of material
the farmer ought to have soma knowl

wants. If it contains un abundance of
lime, any addition of liiuo would be a

deficient jn lime, and is a rotten took or
inicacious soil, thn application of caus
tic lime will alo liberate and teudor
