pet scheme 'of its own. That i rathei
Strang. Lonjr before we ever saw n
line in the Conservative on the mbject,
wo tilled attention to the matter in the
colnans of this journal taking tl.
ground that (he South would be open
to Northern emmigration as soon as the
war was over, and that the tide would
turn that tcay urging, upon this basis,
the necessity of inviting aad encourag
ing immigration to Kansas now. Months
afterwards the Confenative called at
tention to the subject. Very well. We
never thought of boasting 0f this mat
ter, nor of accusing the Governor of
apptopria'Jng our thunder. The case
was a very plain one, and we plumed
aay one of ordinary capacity could see
the point and foiceof the argument;
and that thousand! os others besides
ourself could see the matter in the same
light, and no great glory to any one for
the perception of so plain a case.
As to a geological suiverv, that has
bepn done in other S'ates, nd the mere
application of the subj-ct to this State
was hardly n manufactuie of 'thunder
at nil; at any rate, if manufactured, it
was niide of bonowed m:iterinl.
Aud the same mav be aid of all the
other "pet schemes" of the Con-erva-tives
it never originated out of them,
and its presump.ion in claiming them
as iU own, when enry journal in the
State Las spoken of and advocated them,
is a piece of silly egotism as discredit
able to itself as it is insulting to the
press of the Slate.
We eommend t :e Consera.ive for its
advocacy of these Keasuie; it has done
well in that regard and deserves well
for its outspoken sentiments in favor ol
measures that are of renl importance to
our. young State. We only condemn
that s.'lf-conceit which takes all to iUelf,
and seems to think theie are no o'her
journals no nothing in Kansas but the
Conservative and its distinguished ed
itor.

of characters that followed in the wake
of Gen. Blunt. Gambling and prosti

rich or poor, black or white," who has
no more self respect nnd no fitterappre

this matter, is qualified or in a polite
sense, fit for any official position. He
has not even the commonest insticts of
gentk manly deportment, and apparent

requirements of civility than a Hotten

to cast obloquy upon our young State

breeding to digrace. We say nothing

Friend Robert. On Monday last,
whilt in camp at Ft. Scott, our Co. re
ceived orders Io march to Snnta Fe, 12
miles sou-h of Knnas City, and never
were marching oiders moie welcome,
or men more ready to execute ihem,
than at this lime; for our thort stay of
one week was nmple to give us a hearty
dislike to the town, and all the men were
anxious to leave as soon as possible.
We nrrired at this place on Thursday,
nothing occurring on the way up worthy
of note. We miss tb comfoi table
quarters here that we had provided our
i!vos with at Aubrey, and are obliged
to camp oat in the timber adjoining
town, our tenls being the only shelter
we have against wind or storm.
In the early history of Kansas this
place was noloiioui as "Oxford pre

was perpetrated upon (lie people at the
ballot-box by Border Ruffian,in the at

England and France are almost at

country, peopled by Germans, but ced

All our armies, as well as those of
the rebels, are bow in winter-quarlf r,
except it be that under Banks and the
one under Gilmore at Charleston.
Rebel deertions continue very com
moo at all points, and the flight of
Southerners to escape tho aweeping
conscription coming by order of the
Jeff. Davis government, is extensive
the chivalry are running away by the
thousands. Many of the refugees are
doubtless favorable to the Union, but
large numbers of them are merely
cowards, who care no mora for the
Union than for the Confederacy, if as
much; but these will make the greatest
ado. Some of these fellows will bear
watching. Nearly 4,000 of them arriv.
ed at Cario on the 1 8th of last month,
and there are large numbers at other
points.
Deserleis from Lee's army represent
ed that the rebel soldiers are suffeiing
for want of food. Other report say
they have plenly to et, but no great
variety.
It is reported that from 2,000 to 3.000
rebels in Canada are marshaled and
prepaiing to make a descent on John
son's Island, to release the rebel prison
ers there. Preparations have betn
made to give them a warm reception
should they make the attempt.

Tho Richmond correspondent of the
London Times says, in speaking of the
fixed purpose of the North, "there is
something sublime in this shadowy
earnestness and misty magnificence of
Northern faith and self reliance." The
terms 'shadowy and 'misty' refer to
i lie belief that our government -is to
extend from tho "icy pole to the Aim
ing belt of the equator," as well as
fiom sen to serf. We ngreo with this
rebel that tins is a sublime faith; but it
i hardly 'shadowy.' But is it not
somothing more wondorful than this
Northern faith, that the boasted chivar-'
ry have found something to ndmiic
something even 'sublimu--in the 'mud
sell' of the North ? Surely the world
is progressing ! Light has dawned
even on the darkness of Southern blind
ness, and the 'chivalry' begin to see 1
Verily there is hope for the world !
