THE INDEPENDENT: OSKALOOSA, KANSAS. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER IK 1865; i U! m IM l&! IMIi's ftprijul. (JAME. FOLLOW MV LEADER. Whliout a bold and active leader this sport is dull and monotonous; with one possessing the necessary qualifications its quite the contrary. Anv number may play at it. A lea der is fixed on, and the other play ers range themselves in a line be hind him. He commences the sport by some feat of agility, such its lea ping, hopping, or climbing, and his followers then attempt to nerform it in succession. He then goes to another trial of skill ; ihe others, or so many of them as are able to do so, follow his example, and thus the sport proceeds until the parties think fit to cease. The most nimble and active should, of course, be chosen for a leader; he should perfoim feats of such difficulty as to render the sport interesting, at the same lime avoiding such as he knows can only be undertaken by himself, or by one or two of his followers. If one boy can perform a feat, which those who are placed him in rank fail in at tempting, he takes precedence of them until he is, in like manner ex celled by any of those who are be hind him. .A Cm sk Story. Two short sighted men, Chins and Chan:;, were always quarreling as to which of them could see best; and us they heard there was to bea tablet erect ed at the gate of a neighboring tem ple they determined to visit it la gether on a given day and put the visual power of each "to the test. But each desiring to take advantage of the other, Ching went immediats ly to the temple, and looking quite close to the tablet saw an inscrip tion with the words "To the great men of the past and the future." Chang also went prying still closer, and, in addition to the inscription, To the ureal men of the past and ie -future," read from smaller char acters, "Erected bv the familv of Xing In honor of the great man.' On the day appointed, standing at a distance from which neither could read, Ching exclaimed, "The inscrip tion is, To the great men of the past "and the future.' '. "True," said Chang, "Imt you have left out a part of the incsription, which 1 can read .but you can not, and which is writ ten in small characters: 'Erected by the familv of Line in honor of the great man.'" "There is inscription," said Ching. no such "There is," said Chang. So they waxed wroth, and, after abusing one anoth er, agreea to reier xne matter to tiie high-priest of the temple. He heard their story, and quietlv said, "Gen tleman, there is no tablet to read; it was taken into the interior of the Jtemple yesterday." HOSESTY THE UEST POLICY. A friend related the following little in cident illustrating the above proverb. A gentleman ol his acquaintance look passage on the steamer from Boston to New-York, and upon ap plying for a state room, was told mat an were engaged, lie was much disappointed, and requested the captain to take his name, so that if any room should happen to be left vacant, he could take it. Late in the evening he called at the captain's office and was told that he could not be accomodated. He then paid for a berth in the common cabin, but on receiving his change found he had twenty-five cents too much, which he immediately returned. The captain looked at the money, and then at him, and after a little thought said, "Mr. M., J'il try and accomodate you," and pave him a berth in" his own, one of the best in the whole boat. A Vawabus Peach. The writer recently saw a single peach sold for $42.50. It was of good but not ex traordinary size, nor was the flavor jbetler than that of many peaches in the market. It occurred thus: A Sunday School were holding a Mis sionary meeting. After the usual speeches and collection, a young gentleman, one ol the scholars, sta ted that he. had something to say oDoiu a pcacn. lie then related how a Jadyplanted a peach pit five yeary before, and-ofler properly ea ting for the tree had this year gath ered the fruit, of which he had one. Then,. after some very pertinent re marks on the reasonableness of expecirig good, fruit from children as Wll n trom trees on which much IJtip'Ji'id been bestowed, he presen ted thejeech to the Alisslonaiy Society. A gentleman immediately offered a ijoijTirfor it; themale Bible c'nss offered $5, av.d receiving it, icseoted it again to the Society. t was then bought and presented to the Society twice at f I each time, tien for'S"tMice, and finally the teacher ofr'he -female Bible class offered $5 fur it 'on condition thai he might divide it among his pupils, and .the pit himself to plant, protni siing to-give the first fruits to the same Society., The male Bible class ag.iin inadea higher offer; the other teacher rsponded, and aftr a friend-lyj'cnwtesti-it was awarded to him for; $25,50, or $42.50 in all.
