Another advance of five cents on the bushel was made in tho price of wheat Friday morning by our local buyers. Little Harry, infant child of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Mcintosh, died Thursday at 9:20 o'clock. Funeral services at 8 m. The tramp who was injured in the railroad accident at Haul's Htalion some days ago, has sued the Pants Fe company for damages. The Amatner Band are practicing s new overture composed by rroressor Pette, and are making fine progress, un der the direction of their teacher. Prof. Richards. Co u rant : Mr. Lelghton, of the Central Land and Loan Co. of Emporia, spent Sunday in Howard. Lelghton is always glad to be ia a Christian city.if it is only for s Sunday now and then. The coo tract for rebuilding Floral Hall at the fair grounds was let by the Board of Directors of the Lyon Qounty Agricultural Society, last Thursday, to John Hammond, for 900. The Board of Regents of the State Normal, at their meeting Thursday, transacted considerable routine business, but failed to elect a teacher of English the only vacancy now remaining in the faculty. " We learn that Win. B. Strong offers a gold watch worth $150 to the best-look. ing agent along the main line and branches of the Santa Fe, The agents will all assemble in Topeka on the first day of the fair. Americas Herald : A German family, twelve in number, accompanied by young man, arrived In Americus Mon. day night They had previously bought a farm two milea west of this place, and are now living on it. Americus Herald : While J. W. Par rington was burning some bunched grass yesterday morning the fire made such rapid headway as to get oat of his reach. The result was that over fifteen tons of this year's hay was burned. John Prince, the colored man who was arrested in this city last week for making a deadly assault upon Charles Ashley, was taken to Cottonwood Falls, where the crime was committed, by the marshal of that place Thursday morning. Rev. Dr. Cordley, II. E. Torrington and J. L. W. Bell have been appointed as members of a committee to secure transportation for the Emporia chorus to the Bismarck Jubilee, which takes place on tho 18th and 10th of the present month. . Wm. Hollingsworth residing on Tay lor creek, about three miles northeast of the city, received a telegram from In- dianoDolis Thursday announcing the death of his daughter, Mrs. Nancy Pray, who spent some time in Lyon county last year for the benefit of her health. The superstitious ot our state are somewhat troubled over visitations of swarms of dragon flies, or "snake-feed er," which have appeared in several Kansas towns, Atchison furnishing the first reports of them. One day last week they visited Emporia in large numbers. Can any of our local entomologists ex plain these visitations? The Santa Fe road ia getting in order again, and passenger and freight trains are running on time from Albuquerque east, and between that point and Santa Fe and Denver. In a few days ot good weather it is expected that the wash-out west of Lamy Junction will be repaired, when through tickets will again be sold over the line to San Francisco. A very success! ul rehearsal of the Bismarck class was held Wednesday evening .of last week at the Con gregational Church, under the direc tion of Prof. Buntley. Besides the prac ticing ot music, arrangements were made for the class banner and badges. Prof. Buntley informs us that about 108 of our singers have made arrangements for their tents at the Jubilee, and he thinks there will be several more who will finally conclude to go. Mr. J. S. Alexander, of the firm of Russell & Alexander, called at The News office last week on his way to Topeka from Colorado. The firm since putting in water works at Emporia, have finished works at Silver Cliff and Colorado Springs, Col., and have now contracts to supply Las Vegas, N. M., and Ouray and South Pueblo with wa ter. He will return to Colorado in a few days. Last week on Fifth avenue, the driver of the Central Stables' baggage wagon ran into the delivery wagon of L. C. Wood's grocery store, driven by Willie Borton. Wood's wagon was up set and somewhat demoralized, and the shafts becoming disconnected the horse started off. When near the Fifth Avenue Hotel some men tried to stop him and he broke into a run, but stopped when he reached the Sixth avenue gro cery. No one was injured, and the dam age was not great. Complaints are made all over the West, particularly in Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, that wire fences attract light ning, which often results in the killing of stock. The stock imagine that the fence affords protection from the storm, and accordingly huddle up to it. One instance is given where sixty-five head of sheep were killed in Nebraska at a single stroke, and another where ten head of cattle were killed. Some farm ers think it would be profitable to do away with wire fencing altogether. About fifty couples attended the com plimentary hop at Jay's hall on Wednes day evening of last week, and the the festivltes of the occasion were enjoyed by those present with ap parently aa much relish as if the weather had not been excessively warm. The music and prompting were good and the floor in excellent condition, and the ladies generally looked very charming In their tasteful summer costumes. There were several visitors from abroad present, besides the "beneficiaries," and several couples came up to enjoy the so cial pleasure as spectators. The march began about half-past nine, and dancing was con tinned, with an intermission at IS, until the wee sma' hours. Fred Henderson, a colored man who formerly resided at Emporia, was arrest ed In this city by Marshal Johnson Friday, in pursuance of a telegram received Thursday from Canton, this state, advising the authorities here that Henderson had started for Empora and requesting them to take him into custo dy. Henderson was passing along in front of the court house this morning, when he was recognized by ex Marahal Fleming, who told Marshal Johnson that was his man, and the fugi. live was promptly captured and lodged In Jail. His offense was attempted rape upon an old lady of Canton, and it is in timated that his case will be summarily disposed of upon his return to that place. The public will ba gratified to learn that the question of the drain on the north side offiixth avenue between Mer chants and Congress streets, has at last been amicably adjusted. The arder of the city council instructing the street commissioner to fill the ditch with earth, was - rescinded last week at a special meeting ' of that body, at which it was agreed that the Conliilgi" Hotel Company should con- inue the wooden sewer as far as to the bridge on Sixth avenue westcf Constitu tion street, and that the city would im prove the drain from that point to beyond the city limits. As this was the only fair method of settling this matter, we are glad to note that the agitation on this question has resulted so. satisfactorily to all parties concerned. Our Reading correspondent furnished us another case of shooting last week. This time the victim made his escape, and the effects of his injuries were not ascertained. His name was not known, nor his mission, but being "suspicious' looking he was fired upon by a farmer and at least wounded. The other day a servant girl was fired -upon in the same nighboruuod and fatally wounded by a man who fancied there were burglars in the house and who discharged his revol ver at a retreating object in the darkness, with the result indicated. This is an al together unwarranted use of fire-arms, and deserves the attention of the au thorities. Human life should be held too sacred to allow any man who choses to open fire upon any one he deems a suspicious character." It may furnish bal m for a man's conscience to k now w hen he has killed aa innocent party, that be did so through a mistaken concep tion that person's identity, but to the in. dividual slaved or to the relatives it matters nothing now the death was brought about. It is the mission of law to put the highest possible protection npon property and life, and if no other means will avail, in such cases as these, the Guiteaus and other easily ex cited shooters with poor judgment should be rendered harmless by a spec ial statute providing against their car rying arms. The Santa To Colllaloa. Capital : The collision Tuesday week on the A., T. & S. F. R. R, three miles east of Topeka, resulted in the almost total destruction of two engines, eleven cars were totally demolished, and fully 60 head ot cattle killed," the others es caping over the country, some of which are yet at liberty, and some being found ten miles away. The two engines were about of equal size and weight, and in. stead of one going on top the other they went "into" each other and the cars be hind each followed their example, and the terrible destruction of engines, cars, cattle, and freight followed, a probable loss to the company of f30,000. It was difficult to find pieces of many of the cars large enough to tell their numbers, The cattle were medium Texans and belonged west.' The dead ones were sold to Messrs. Maxwell and Bischoff, butch. era of Topeka, who will use them for rendering purposes. The disaster was the result of the west bound conductor and engineer misunderstanding a dis patch. A temporary track about 100 feet in length has been put down around the wreck, and trains pass oyer the tempo rary structure at a snail's pace. The or ders dispatched the conductor were to "run to Spencer regardless of any other train," and both conductor and engineer read it run to Topeka, the "S" resemb ling a "T." Mr. Carpenter, the west bound engineer, was greatly affected by the accident He has had thirteen years' experience, and this is his first accident. School Board Meeting;. The Emporia Board of Education met in the new school building on Tuesday evening of last week. All the members were present. It was decided to open the schools on Monday, September 12th. A committee, of which the superintend ent is chairman, was appointed to ar range for the public opening of the new Constitution street building. It was decided to procure three Ruttan furnaces, Nos. 7, 6 and S for the new building, and a contract was entered into with E. C. Condit, of Kansas City, to furnish the same for $1,450 and put them in complete. Teachers' Institute. Wednesday, August 3. This morning 57 answered to roll-call nine were tardy and six were absent The early morning business was cut short so that we might hear from our visitors. Dr. O. W. Hoss first gave us a neat talk and then read "The Old Clock on the Stairs." All who havo ever heard him read know just how he read it. Elder Rice next gave us a very prac tical talk on school work. He thought he was qualified to give advice because he was not a teacher. He went upon the principle that one knows more about another's business than his own, or at least he always thought so. The W.C.T. U. had a committee pres ent who captured all the teachers with a pledge to work for temperance in the country schools. The committee con sisted of Mrs. Buck, Mrs. Kirby and Mrs. Edwards. Warren Stone was with us to-day. Sickness has prevented his joining the Institute, but he has been a frequent vis itor. The visitors to-day were Mrs. Buck, Eastman, Kirby and Edwards; Misses Flora Brelner, Belle Wood, Callle Brown and Bartholomew ; Messrs. O. W. Hoss, Rice, W. Stone, W. E. MacMahon, J. H. Hill, E. Hamilton, and Allen, a former teacher of Silver Cliff, Col. P. E. DaGoguk. TiiCttSDAY, August 4. After the usual morning exercises the reports of the critics were called for. The fact that teachers are not in the hab it of applauding good teachers was men tioned by critic A, and he referred to the addresses of n. C. Specr and O.W. Hoss, which all appreciated highly, yet noth ing was so conspicuous at the close of these addresses as the silence. He thought that courtesey demanded ap plause after such able addresses; and then he took his seat amidst prolonged cheering. There was much earnest work done to day in all the classes, it being a general review, and questions were discussed with vigor. Mrs. Morse has, despite her illness, worked hard during the institute. Even when she was unable to sit up she has planned and sent the outlines of lessons presented to her classes. She was un able to be present to-day and Frank Kizer taught the history and physiology and N. W. Sonnedecker the geography classes. The visitors to-dny were Mrs. George Fowler, Mrs. Judge Barnes, Mrs. Itug- gles and Mrs. Way; the Misses Bell Wood, It L. Bartholomew. Callie Brown, Flora Breiner. Carrie Goddard. May Herbert, Anna Greer, May Roberts and Steere, and Messrs. Thyge Sogard, Wm. Phillips, Elder Lotz, J. II. Hill, W. E. McMahone. P. E. DaGogck. Clipped frooa the Hartford Call. The river is unusually low for this season of the year and the mill here has been compelled to shut down in conse quence. Oar better half has a pet bird. The other day she hung the cage containing the bird to the limb of a tree, when a wren brought worms to the cage and fed the imprisoned dim. Thos. .Peyton raised about three acres or millet this season ana has presented ns with a specimen measurinir over six feet in length. Since harvesting the crop he haa replanted the same piece, which is oominr forward verr nicelv and with favorable weather will produce a gooa crop. Dedication. The Rev. J. Kirby, one of the best preachers in assisted by Iter. C R. Rice, P. and other min isters, will dedicate the new Methodist Episcopal church just built at the corner of Walter Clark's farm on Lebo creek, next Sunday. August iin, at 1U:3U a. m. Have tried a number of machines, but until we tried the Royal St. John we have never been able to get a machine that would make a long elastic stitch without drawing or puckering the cloth. Your machine does the work perfectly, on account of the firm,' round, elastic stitch peculiar to the St. John ; and by its rapid motion and light running we arc able to make on one machine about 1,500 socks per day with ease to the operator. This we eouia not ao on any outer ma chine, although we tried them thoroughly. We also regard it as the simplest, most durable and lightest running machine severest test and freely recommend it.
