SIDLINGER, Tlie IDnaggist Inscriptions a Specialty. Aorth Main street Hutchinson J. M Thukston, the head attorney of the Union l'aciiic will address the republican state league meeting at Topekanext week. J. Rats Uuirton seems to be rebuilding his fences. Of course, Dick Chase Is guilty. Hasn't the committee proof of it in the three first witnesses examined? They were all negre women and ex-convicts, at that. Surely no other evidence is needed. Turn him out. True late legislature seeing that there was a dearth of office seekers, manufactured a new office, that of state accountant After the place was mat'e Morrill appointed an English man to Oil it, who had been a citizen of the United States just three days. In fact,be swore allegiance to the con stitution so that he might qualify. The News says, "a conspiracy" ex isted among the city populists to cap tura the city government at the late election. As all the candidates on the municipal ticket were republicans and so were all, but two on the citizens ticket, and as those two were elected, the "conspiracy" was success ful, wasu't it, Watson-Moore-Spons-ler? DEMOCRATIC EDITORS. The democratic state editorial asso ciation meet in Leavenworth day after tomorrow. It will be a love-feast of the mossbacks and hardshells. The postmaster editors will probably favor tiie endorsement of Grover and the Wall Street gold bugs. The free and unlimited silver coinage faber pushers should have courage enough to kick a little but they wont. THE PREACHERS RESOLUTE. The two or three hundred M. E. clergymen that assembled in this city at conference, took occasion to de nounce the governor and the rebupli can legislature by resolutions. Tlte first, for his appointment and instruction to the metropolitan police, and the legislature for its drunken de bauch at the Baker banquet at Leaven worth. Yet these same distinguished divineshave done more than any other class of professional men to keep the republican party in power. They know the character of the men who lead the republican party in Kansas and have had frequent examples of their dallying with the liquor trade and their want of sincereity on the subject of prohibition. They might have passed the resolution at every conference for the past 20 years with perfect consistency as to facts. When preachers cease to be hide-bound par tlsansthey may hope to accomplish something in the way of reform. All WORK AND NO PAT. Governor Morrill's investigating committees have suddenly discovered that the work assigned them of search ing for defects in the conduct of po pulists officials, so as to provided places for hungry republicans out of a job, will have to be done without com pensation or reward to themselves, the witnesses or anyone interested in ousting the pops. The legislature made no appropriation for the expense of the committees and the state treas urer and auditor refuses to cash their vouchers. The governor dare not call an extra session for the populist sen ate knowing the motive that prompted the appointmeut of the committees would see the whole outfit and the governor with them in the botti mless pit, before they would appropriate one dollar. They have not proved any thing to Justify the expense they seek to saddle on the taxpayers of Kansas and their only object is to turn the populist officers out and pu". npubli cans m their places. The whole thing was buncomb from the start. Their only hope now is that the next legisla ture will be republican and will make the appropriations. THE UOVEBMVU NOKmOWIMG. BentMurdock, the erratic statesman and republican editor, at Eldorado, is the one defendant of Gov. Merrill. He defends the governor and in so doing casta a dark Bhadow and smirches the reputation of his party in this state. lie apologizes for the governors mis takes and charges the responsibility on the thousands of republican office-hm'Vp-j who flocked to Topeka like honored with a fat position as a reward for party service. Nothing like this was ever heard of in the history of the state before. The demand was bo great that bis excellency was compell ed to give his time and attention to politicians wanting office to the neg lect of matters of legislation of inter est to the people. Thousands were disappointed and returned home to knife the administration and those ap pointed have proved to be incompe tents with no qualifications or fitness for any position. Aocordmg to Bent the governor is capable, honest and fully expected to make a good gover nor. But, the hungry hoard of office seekers would not let him do as be would like to have done. The gover nor according to Bent is sorrowing over the mistakes and his want of will power at the beginning of 1)U adminis tration It may be thai the governor is hon est, capable and fully expected to make a model officer. The promise made to the people in his first message would warrant the belief in his geod intentions. But, the people who are supposed to be benefited by the executive and law-making power at Topeka might properly remind him of the old saying, "That hell was paved with good intentions." If the repub lican party in Kansas is run and con troled with such men, what have the people to hope for from such a party? When the people have fully investi gated the conduct of the executive and legislature of last winter, they will understand that they have made a great mistake and they will not be slow to correct the mistake at the first opportunity. WE SHOULD SAT SOT. While denying Bent Murdock's charge that It is '-kicking," the Kan sas City Gazette, Geo. W. Martin's paper prints the following: "It is quite evident tout the republi can party in Kansas is not in very good shape. Every other republican you meet is disgusted and growling, while one by one the republican news papers appear with a roast of the state administration or trie legislature There is some queer work going on, and it looks as though we had lost our cunning, or perhaps it would be better to say thatcunnliuno longer counts With 118,329 votes for Lewelling, 20. 709 for Overmyer, and 5,490 for Pick erina, making a total of 150,534 against 148.0U7 fur Morrill, we fear that if the election was to be held to-morrow we wouldn't be in it. THE POWER OF INTEREST. In order to illustrate the power of interest, let us take an illustration. A tew yeiirs ago Marshall Field, rented t the W. 0. T. a lot of ground, on the corner of La Salle and Montoe streets, in Chicago, for $40,000 a year, for 99 years. During this time the women will pay to him the sum of S3, 900,000 for the above lot of land, and they also agreed to pay all the taxes on the same. But, if Marshall Field should put the money out as fast as it comes in, at 6 per cent compound interest, it would amount to $040,306,137 at the end of 99 years. Take another illustration: It is said that J. D. Bockfellow's dailr in come is $41,600. If be should continue to get this salary for 100 years it would amount $1,503,952,000. But if he should continue to put it out at 0 per cent compound Interest, as fast as it cams in, at the end of 100 years it would amount to 248,832,284,050 This is equal to 8,910.878 tons of silver and would suffice to lay 317 tons of silver on every mile ot the circumference of the earth. If reduced to gold it would suf fice to lay nearly 24 tons of that metal to every mile of the circumference of the earth. The annual production of gold in the world, at the present time is about $150,000,000. At this rate it would take the produc: of the world 1058 years to equal the 'vast sum that llockefellews salray would amount to in 100 years, at 6 per cent compound interest. That is, the salary of one man would equal more than 16 times the world's annual production of gold. J. G. Malcolm. Big Fonr Rente.
