BAnTow-Ox-THE-SoFXD, X. Y., Sept. CO. A toniiic explosion occurred at the Dilmiir powder worlcs, Bay Chester, on the Harlem liver branch of the 2sgy York it New I laven rail road, about 10 this morn ing, resulting in the instantaneous death of four men employed in the faetory. The explosion occirfod in tho packing "house , a one story frame building twenty by lliirty fect, in the centre of the grounds', about two hundred yards from flic main fae tory, a large building near the water, where the bulk of the giant powder and nitro glycerine used in the new ti'iiiadtiei work ir- nianufaclmcd. The men were leird at work putting up antl packing cartridges, when uudtlenly and without warning tho explosion occur red, shattering the building to splinters and blowing the four men to frairments. The ! exploding powder, of which there a large quantity, s-not up into the air as liiirh as hfty feet and splinters of the Iiliilding were blown ti mile distant. The names of the men killed are as follows: 3Iax Shafbolt, Ernest Dr.ilen, John Rousch audlTr. Iiein hart. Nothing was left of them except fragments of their bodies. Their hands, legs, feet, arms, pieces of tkull, backbone and charred bits of lle-h were scattered in every diieclion, from five to mx bundled feet from the packing house. Jlax Cruger, foreman of the works, says the explosion was caused by two men shooting into tho building, lie was in the packing hou'-e at the time and going out found two men who .viid they were shoot ing squirrels. He says he threatened them with arrest. They then becams impudent. As the explosion occurred the men were been hurrying away. Ii. Staiibfield, superintendent of the pow der company, was near bv and picked up a box full of fragments "of the dead men. Others assisted in the work and the re mains were all placed in a heap to await the coront r's anival. One of the dead men leaves ii family in Germany; the other-, were single. The manufactory of the Ditmar works was nearly wrecked, one end bc-ing blown to pieces, exposing the interior. After the explosion the lower timbers of the building took lire and burned fiercely. A large tree near by w;ts torn up by the roots. Branches of other trees were blown away. The ground arouud for half a mile is strewn with fragmeuts of the dead, splinters, packing paper, etc. The violence of the explosion shook h-jiics in Bartow, across the creek trom Bay Chester. Many windows in John Elliott's Bay-View hotel at l'elham bridge, over a mile away, were shattcic-d. Thomas V Lir.wood'n blacksmith shop at West Chester was shaken violently. The windows in many houses in the tainc til lage were broken. This is the second explosion that haj oc curred in these worics this 3 cir. The one hist w inter blew a man to fragment. Thy remains of the men killed today conld not possibly lm identined. Many persons living miles away drove hurriedly to the scene and some" of them helped gather together the fragments of the dead men. Iu regard to the lib eration of political prisoner, Dr. Toul tiiJf tald it would be a dangerous prece dent to establish to liberate without trial or punishment those responsible for such a mom ntous act as the deposition and kid napping ot Prince Alexander, besides being co.itiary to laws which were safeguards of the county. B. sides, if the prisoners were released as demanded the probabilities were that the people would kill them in tie streets, such was the popular iudignaii m a rainst the implicated men. The govern ment thought the imprisoned oliicers shoulil be tried lir.st and subseijuently of fered cleniciify. In conclusion, the deputation assured Gen. Kaulbers that Bulgaria is thankful to the czar for past protection, but maintained thai the laws of the country mv.s: be re spected. Gen. ivaulbers in reply said -that Kulgar iaiis knew Yery well that the cznr had their prosperity at heart, but, lie added, tht-y must confide in the czar ;ind carry out hfs wishes. I)r, Youllift interrupted Gen. Kaulbers at thi.? point and said: "If th;t is all you have to say, we will retire.' The deputa tion then "withdrew. The Bulgarian ministry have concluded to postpone their reply to Russia's note de manding :ts conditions of the czar's protec tion the raising of the state of siege, of the liberation of the oolitical prisoners and the freedom of all patties to vote in the elections for members of the grand sobti anji to choose a new prince.
