Tho subject of tho copyright has recently
become very familiar: tho gallant efforts of
American authors to protect themselves and j
vu'jir uicLureii uuruau uisum muiimij uui?
of property as oven barbarous nations extend
to the owners of pots and pans, have had tho
sympathy of Christendom; but there is one
phaso of copyright matters not i.o often dis
cussed; it concerns tlio claims of artiste to
their work. An entire misapprehension of
o artist's rjghts, or rather an entire obliv
iousness to tho fact that ho has any rights, has
gotten a pood many peoplo into trouble
lately, and it i3 rather for the enlightenment
nnd "lwnefit of tho public than in defense of
the cause of tho artists that tins little juq-er is
written.
Not only can any American art ist secure a
copyright on any composition or design ho
- akes, but any original art matter m any
pyriIrhtcd periodical is covered by that
-pyright, and any ono infringing thereon is
wblo to ruit for damages, possibly "very
.e .vy hunages.
The recent awakening in art matters liar ro
;ulted, among other things, in greatly increas
ing the number and kinds of reproductions ol
pictures; good photographs of paintings are
now made here; commerce in Ihwn competes
with tho enormous trado in forc:gn photo
graphs; more and inoro engraving of all
kinds is lieing done; American etchings, in tho
vernacular of the trado, aro having a loom,
and the cheaper and moro irx:hanical pro
cesses of repi eduction aro many, and con
stantly increasing. A copyright on a picturo
that is likely to bo popular in these cheaper
forms may bo worth nnvw hero from SCOO to
C25.000.

Tlio nrlists aro finding this out, and arc
copyrighting their pictures ten times as fre
quently as they did ten -cars ago, and tlio il
lustrated iKriodicalsaio also waking up to
their rights to their own pictures.. These
changes arc bringing troublo ujxm a great
many v. orthy and energetic cigar manufac
turcrs, almanac publishers, snap boilers and
patent medicine men. The taste for art lias
spread among theso gentlemen, and many of
them pay handsomely for very good pictures
to bo used in advertising, and others prefer
to get csy good pictures without pa ing for
them. It is in pursuit of this enterprising
end that the tiouhle cornea.
Every di ug and cigar shop w indow i3 or

ies of excellent paintings. Until somo inter
national copyright law is passed tho wholo
world of foreign pictures is open to any sort
of j irncy, nnd it is a common thing to seo

Without an international copyright theso
privileges are ocurcLto tho advertiser, and
tho foreign artist can't help himself.
