THE RACK.
Yesterday afternoon a good-sized crowd
wnMi.ttwl nt tlw West Wichita fair ground to
witness the trotting race between 3IcKen
zie's Drummer Boy and Cooper's Brittle Sil
ver. The rao was for $300 a side and was
won by Drummer Bjy;
This race was one of the most exciting and
inlere-tiug events of the season. 3Iostof
tLo local sports were upon the ground and
bet heavily, fully $5,000 being up on the
race. -
Brittle Silver, on account of the previous
victory, it was believed by' man-, would
easily win the race, and was accordingly
heavily wagered upon by her admirers.
3Iasou, Lapham and Clapham were judges,
Davis starting judge. The race was run in
light buggies.
After five unsuccessful attempts a start
was made at 2 :33. Drummer Boy came up
tho home stretch ahead but broke just as ho
was going under the wire, giving the heat to
Brittle Silver. Time, 2:50.
Both the second and third Iicats were close
ly contested but resulted in favor of Drum
mer Boy; the time of the second heat being
2:44f. of the third, 2:41);.

.The Y. 3L C. A. has iortunately secured
3Ir. Frank W. Smith, an ex-soldier and ex
prhouer of Anderoouville, to deliver his lec
ture on "In and out of Audersonville."'
Everybody says his lecture is simply im
mense. When he lectured in Chicago in lbZ-3
3Ir. Hemingway, the general secretary of the
Y. 31. C. A. there, said: "3Ir. Frank W.
Smith's lecture 'In and out of Audersonville'
delivered in Farewell hall Dec Gth, in our Y.
31. C. A. member's course, was a success in
every sense of the word. In spite of the
darkness and storm, and the fact the popu
lar lecturers like Cough, Stoddart, and oth
ers were speaking in various halls in the
city, over 1,400 were present- A more de
lightful audience is seldom ever seen in our
hull. A reporter said: 'You can't report
that man, you "must hear him.' Another
said: 'He is entertainment himself.' "'
