Chicago, 111., Sept. 12. The wheat mar
ket wns quite active, and after temporary
weakness early in the session another de
cided bull turn was witnessed. Fluctua
tions on the two previous days were in
moderate range, but prices of late appear
to advance more easily than they decline,
a. he local crowd cot short a little wheat
yesterday and there was more selling to
day when the decline was around 7$e,
"but the bears realized that stocks of cou
tiact wheat are so light they have no lever
age, and they lower speedily on every sign
of a substantial reaction. Opening iiyures
t ere about on a leel with jesterday's
closings to a shade better. Then
followed a temporary feeling of weakness
and c decline, as it was generally
believed that a break was about due after
the buljre that we have had. There was a
large volume of ti ade d uringthe hist hour of
the session on local and outside Older ac
count, with the bulk of the trading in De
cember, at around 7SK(" Tfl1 -Tc. There was
a firm close, at a net gain for the day of c
in all futures and hhc below the ex
treme top.
A moderate business was reported in
com tho early part of the day, but as the
hesslon advanced the market became quiet
and in active. The feeling developed was
easy early and trading was at lower prices,
the local ciowd being long, and the mar
ket opened weak at uiLc below
the closing prices of je.sterday,
and, under liberal ofTerings, prices
declined i2Xc Under the decline a
lictttr demand sprung up, the ciowd be
coming short and the market rallied (c,
ruled steadier and closed tii0fc lower
than yesteiday.
Oats ruled weaker and prices a shade
lower. Trading was lighter and chiefly
for October and May.
.An easier feeling pievailed in pork with
moderate trading. October ruled oOlOc
and .kmuary 5(fl0c lower, the market
clo.sig tame at medium figures.
A moderate business was transacted in
lard. Near delneiies were easier with
litrLt trading, while the longer deliveries
ieie steady and prices favoiable to sellers.
Little interest was nianifcbted in short
libs. Trices declined lt15c on the de
feirtd deliveries and the marke. closed
stta y at medium figures.

WARDROBES ON "SPEC."
OressnittUers "Who Gamble Sometimes for
the Pay Due Them.
It.is said by a 2sew York correspondent of
ThtChicago 2sews that flressmaters occasion
ally finish costumes on pure speculation, and
run tbe risk of ever being paid at all, the me
dium of this speculation being some pretty
girl of good social position and empty purse
who has a right to expect that she might
marry well were she properly presented be
fore the fastidious eye of , tho eligible bachelor.
There is a story "told, for -rrhose truth I'm
not altogether prepared to answer, but which
one hears told very often, about a certain
famous New Tork beauty who has very little
money and a great deal of physical loveliness,
and who made the laiistake of fancying that
English peers cared enough about American
beauty to marry it without fortune. She is
exquisitely pretty, as well as clever and high
bred looking. One of the rich dressmakers
thought so, too,,srnd hearing her one day be
wail the fact that for want of clothes she
could not ncct pt an invitation to spend tho
seeson in Lcsr Jon, offered to furnish her with
a handsome wardrobe on speculation, provid
ing that she would pay a certain interest on
the money after she had married bor earl or
duke, as t'ho case might be.
Tho git 1 jumped at tho offer, for her look
ing glas had al ays told her that she only
needed tho proper setting to make her a
jewel which a duke might be glad to placo
amid the strawberry leaves, and she firmly
belieT ed that a London season with beautiful
clo?les was tho one thing needful to set her

poor guarusmen anu impecunious oimger

lovo in a cottage. But when tho dukes and
earls found sho bad no fortune, and that the
fine cloches did not represent government
bonds or a pork packing establishment, they
camo to the conclusion that sho was too ex
pensive a luxury, and at the end of tho sea
eou tho beauty returned unwedded and with
no lueaus of paying that dreadful dress
makr'& bill, which seemed n mere bagatelle
to her when sho had sailed away to become
an English peeress.
That xi as tw o years ago. Sho is still un
wedded, that di es&maker's bill is still unpaid,
and tho talk is now that sho is about to ac
cept a wealthy gentleman with a curved nose
and an 01 iental surname, who will not mind
tiiHes of a few thousands for clothos when it
means tho securing of so beautiful a woman,
whose connection will give him an entree
into tho fashionable society w here he so longs
for an opportunity to spend tho income of
his millions
Soma of these speculations, however, have
turned out much more fortunately, and,
stiange to say, one of them was in tho case
of a very plain girl who hud nothing but her
witty tonguo and stylish carriage to recom
mend her, and who, with asetting of good
