Miller, one of the party which was ambushed and four mem bers of it killed in Mexico on January 19 is in town. Mr. Miller was one of three members of the party who es caped and he saved his life by run ning about ten mile? to a ranch, where he organized a relief party and drove back to the scene of the mas sacre and recovered the dead bodies of his comrades. Mr. Miller repre sents the Chicago Pneumatic Tool company and accompanied a party of men interested in a mining property to it, the ambuscade being laid for them on their return trip. Y hile the crime was charged to the Yaqui In dians, Mr. Miller expresses the opinion that it was tho work of rene gade Mexicans. He says that the way the murders were committed is entirely different from the Yaqui methods, and besides he says that the Yaquis are friendly to Amsricans and have never been known to mo lest them. Mr. Miller has prepared two very strong affidavits in reference to the tragedy which he has for warded to the state department at Washington, in which he expresses his views on the subject. WHEN TWO LIARS MET The other day we heard two men talking aboi t hogs. One of the men said: "There is no telling how much a man can lift with one hand. Yes terday I sold a hog that weighed 350 pounds, and I could lift him from one pen into another easily with one hand. I commenced to do that when he was a little pig, lifting him every day from one pen into the other by the ear with one hand." Said the other: "I do not doubt it, for I have done the same thing, and I will tell vou another thing I did. I built two pens close together and put a pig in one of them. I fixed up that pen for a bedroom and fed him in the other. I made a hole in the partition just large enough for him to crawl through comfortably, and every time he was fed he had to go through that hole. Well, yesterday I sold that pig, aud he weighed just 450 pounds. He seemed to get through the hole on the last day as easily as he did on the first." Liar iso. 1 hung his head a minute and then said: "I don't believe a danged word of that!" Exchange. MRS. CARTER ENTERTAINS. Mrs. C. H. B. Carter entertained a number of ladies at her home on north Pleasant street yesterday after noon. It was a social affair to which each lady brought her work and was kept busy while engaging in pleasant conversation, differing in this respect from the customary form of enter tainment by card plaving. Prior to their taking their departure for home the ladies were invited to the dmiog room where delicious refreshments were served. ELECTION IS SUGGESTED The Question of Joint Statehood. Governor Kibbey Sent Message to The Legislature Recommending That a Special Election be Held to Convince Congress of Our Desires. Governor Kibboy has sent the fol lowing message to the legislature, which is self explanatory: Oil! co of the Governor, Phoenix, Ariz., March 10, 1005, To tho Council and House of Repre sentatives of tho Twenty-third Leg islative Assembly of Arizona. Gentlemen: It is a matter of such general information that I need not more than suggest to you the course of certain proposed congressional leg islation providing for the admission to the union cf tie two territories of New Mexico and Arizona, the bill to thai end having failed with the lapse of the recent session of the congress. Nor need 1 more than suggest to you that it is well understood that it is the intention of thoso who favor that legis lation to propose it again at the next session, and that it will require the most earnest and persistent efforts of the people of Arizona as well as her friends outside of Arizona to avert the danger that threatens our autono my. It is not necessary for me here to enter into any discussion of this ques tion. The eentiment of our people is too well known amongst ourselves as being practically unanimous against any legislation having for its object the proposed jointure of the two terri tories as one state, to call for any ar gument from mo to you, or from you to our people. It never ha& been a dispute! question amongst ourselves, nor ono upon whioh there was mater ial division of eentiment. The right of petition, or of protest. its correlative, by the American peo pie to congress is an unquestioned one at this' day. To meet the danger which confronts us, about the only means we have la a decisire and com pletely authentic expression of our protest. I am led to believe that there is prevalent among tho senators and members of the house of representa tives of the national congress a misun deistanding or want of real knowledge of the actual sentiment of our people. It is true that we have addressed to congress innumerable petitions signed by individual citizens: and resolu tions expressive of our wishes, adopt od by both public bodies and private associations, all so far as I am advised earnestly protesting against any legis lation making possible the proposed jointure, and specifically against the I Bssage or what is currently known as the Hamilton bill pending at the last session. Yet it was urged, and, I am advised, with some efllcacy, that those expres sions were not really representative; that they were not authorized nor were they authentic, and that they were not the expression of tho whole people. In view of these facts, and of the danger that will, I fear, inevitably again soon beset us, I hereby respect fully recommend to you that you en act a law directing the calling and authorizing the holding of a special election, at which the people of this territory may emphatically, decisive ly, definitely and conclusively convey to congress tho sentiment of tho peo pie of Arizona upon that subject, so that the quoition of our wishes can never again arise. I have had prepared by the attorney general a bill for an act embodying this recommendation, which I herewith submit to you for your consideration-. Tho bill fixes the date of the proposed election as the day of November, 1905. It might seem to you if the re commendation in general meets your approval, wiser to fix an earlier date, as it is possible that congress may bo called to convene before the time fixed by law for the beginning of the regu lar session, Respectfully, (Signed) Joseph II. Kibbey, Governor, DEATH ON Ladies, you know we mean it when we say 1-4 off regular price at our Shoe Sale March 18, from 2 to 9. The B.-B. Co.
