From the Hoston Advertiser. Nov. 4.
' One of tho greatest and mort peculiar
eniatlont which Charleitown ha known
for a long time, occurred In that cit yes
terday. John M. Sylvester, a man em
ployed by tho city to fumigate house
whero tho uiiall-poi exist and to tako
care of patients, wa tending a man
named Oronvillo Hopkins, who wa af
flicted with thu small-pox in its worst
form at No. 218, Main street. Yestorday
morniDg, bofore daylight, tho man in it (It
of insanity oxprcssod n desiro to tako a
walk. ' Sylvester thought tho request not
an unreasonable one, and wrapping him
In a sheet, took him into tho streets hare
footed and nude, with the ex
ception of tho slight covoring,
the time being Ilvo o'clock in tho
morning, and ttio air at nearly freezing
point. The flrst place ho entered wa a
table, whero tho hostlers were about th lor
morning work. To their excited imaginu-tions-tho
pair leomcd a sheeted spectre
and an attendant (lend, and they were
naturally thrown into n great fright.
Some hid In tho hayloft and said not a
word, while others ran, shouting at the
top of their voicos. Thoy leisurely made
the tour of three stables,, affrighting all
the men thuro employed in n similar man
ner. Tho weird pair promenaded through
Main, Miller and Lawrence, atreots, scar
ing all persons thoy mot. Milkmen on
their morning round whipped up their
horses and drovo off at a break-neck paco,
houtlng, "Murder! Help I" Sleeper
were roustd by tho disturbance, and
Window woro thrown up only
to bo a suddenly slammed
down when the unearthly spoctaclo made
it appearance, bpecial policeman .Mich
ael Hughes was standing at tho corner of
l It UOUDR,
Fbipp and Lawrence streets, near tho
ancient burying ground, when, in tho
darkness he saw tho atrango corfplo about
llfty foet from him. They approached
him, arid ho turned to run, but mustering
cojrage, ho rallied, and broke forth in
charactoriittc speecli: ''Stand back I If
yoar aro human and come near me, I'll
cave both your heads in!" A privato
watchman at Chovaller'a tablo inconti
nently fled, crying, "A spook 1 a spook 1
protect me I" Vf hen last seen, he was go
ing toward Cambridge at tho top of Tils
speed. The uufortunato man's absenco
was discovered by hi Irlcnds, (and ho wa
taken back to tho house, where ho was
placed in chargo of a trustworthy
man narued Joseph Qould. At
about 8 o'clock Sylvester stepped
into the police station, whero Chief of Po
lice Switt and soveral other wero sitting.
The affair had meanwhile been reported
at the station, and us tho fumigator mnde
his appearance there was a vacancy in the
room where the officer were fitting, they
Crushing promiscuously into tho. chief
private office in the rear. Tho chief or
dered the unwelcome intruder to leave in
itantly, and never darken the doors of the
tation again. Tho station was imme
diately fumigated, and disinfectant were
scattered Ireoly around. Chief bwift
promptly discharged Sylvester, and pro
cured in his place a man named John
Reee, who l of good character, and
will be faithful to his duty. Sylves
ter was very indignant alltiu uclion ol tlio
chief; and say ho will "wield tho nen
aeaintt him." The authorities sav thev
would have him arrested if nny one could
bo found to make the arrest, but U9 he Is
roekiDL' with the foul disease, no one dares
to approach him. The chief warns every
one vo give nun a wiuo uertn. syiveste
received $5 for each house fumigated, uni
ha declared that he intended to make Bi.
fortune out of tho thine; this season. For
. tbi, rason he did all he could to spread
the disease, and immediately alter coming
in contuct with tho most malignant cases,
he would stand among crowds and on thu
sfdcwnlk in thu moat cxposod
places. Ho bcamo a regular
bugbear. Citizens would ordor him to
leave thoir vicinity, and little children
would flee at his approach. Ho is man
..of singular appcurance. He has long,
black, snaky hair, nnd a stooped, crooked
figure. He boasts that bo has not washed
himself for twenty years, and tho dirt
stands incrusted on tho back of his neck
to a cousiderablo'dcpth. A tho disease
seems to bo on the increase such n cafe ns
"this i a serious affair. Thero are live
cases of small. pox on l'hipps street, and
the thoroughfaro was closed to public
travel on Saturday.
