New Yokk, 'Dec. 30. A largo crowd
gathered at Centre street ruin to-day,
where a force of ono hundred men are at
work removing tbo ruin. Tlio intention
of employing work-houso prisoners wat
abandoned and poor laboring men en
gaged. The belief teems to prevail that
the remaining bodies aro buried beneath
the ruin of the stairway. Alderman Gil
sen contributed $500 toward the expense
of removing tbo ruins. Judgo Dowling
and Morgan Jones promised to increatu
their donations, and Coroner Herman of
fered $o00. No other remain have yet
been discovered, but pieces of ihawls,
stockings, etc., havo been found.

assisted by several citizens, assumed tbe
responsib'lity and began searching to-day
for tbe bodies supposed to be in the ruins
of tbo Centre street tiro. After a long
search tho, body of a woman wa found
in the debris, but as all tho flush had been
burned off It was boyond recognition.

found on the body, identified it as tho re

CHICAGO POLICE COURT.
PROCEEDINGS IN THE
A BTRAMOK CASE.
Chicago, Dec. 30. Edward A. Everett,
apparently a respectablo gnlleman, living
at number 110 Twenty-second, street, this
city, was on Saturday brought before Jus
tico ilanyon in the police court, charged
by a Miss bbortweli. with having rob
bed ber of ono hundred thousand dollars,
in bonds of tbe Selma and Gulf railroad,
valued at $25,000 and which she had been
entrusted with to deliver to General P. D.
Roddy ot Alabama. According to 'her
statement, she was introduced to Everott
at tbe grand-central hotel in New York,
by one of tbe clerks of tho bouse, and that
she came to Chicago in Everett's care, and
he secured j"vmkih of her trunk long
enough to rob ber of it. Accused was
hold to bail in sum oi $75,000 dollars for
trial in tho criminal court.
New York, Dec. 30. In tho Stokes'
case to-day, D. E. Conley, parlor mam
was cross-examined. The testimony was
unsatlifactorv. bo contradicted the evi
dence be gavo on tbo former trial.
THE "WAR IN CUBA.
Havana, Dsc. 28. Tbe family of Sec
retary Delano arrived bore from New Or
leans yesterday. Tbo insurgents attacked
t'.e town of Mayrie, on the night of tha
12th, and sacked several bouses and killed
twenty Spaniards. Tbo mariners and
sailors of the man-of-war Hullva subse
quently landed and tho insurgents were
driven out. On the night ot tbe 18th
during tbe abtencoof tbo troops on an ex
pedition, the insurgents under Vicente
Garcia, entored tbo town ot Halquin and
captured the fort of Perriquera. On the
return of the volunteer tbey marctied to
tho fort not knowing It was occupied by
tho enemy, and received a heavy fire from
tho insurgents. Tbo next morning tbe
insurgent withdrew alter sacking a num
ber of bouses. A Spanish leuitenant
colonel, a mnjor and several other officers
und some sixty troops were killed. A
forco was sent after Garcia.
