On Monday last Sheriff Irvln arrested
a man named Charles Sbelton, who, in
company with two other men, some ten
years ago, murdered an old man by the
name of Price, who was at that time pro
prietor of a concert saloon in the two
story framo house on Commercial avenue,
north of Tenth street. Price bad on his
person when murdered about ninety dol
lars in money and a watcb, and it was for
this that he was murdered. Some yean
ago 'William Butler, one of tbo murder
ers, was arrested, tried, convicted re
sentenced to tbe penitentlarv for life
Butler is at this time steward of tbe Den-
Itentiery, and is said to be a 'first-class
man" In bis position, and well liked by
tbe officers of the prison. On Mondav
when tbe steamer Sllverthorn arrived
here, Sbelton was found at work on her
as a deck band. He was taken In charge
by Sheriff Irvln, and lodgod in the county

soon be peoping through the bars of the
Alexander county jail. Sheriff Irvln Is

this county. After a while they will all

We do not belong to the Egyptian but to
tbe Nemo club. We left tbe first named
club for many reasons, among them we
will give a lew prominent ones :
First, There was no attendance at regu

Second, In every match game played
there was not a full nino of tho cl ub pres

tbe Modocs and outsiders.
Third, Tbe base-ball rules say there
ball be one captain. The Kgyptalns bad
from nine to fifteen (their full number of
members).
.Fourth, There was no secretary more
than one-third of tbe time.
Filth, The constitution and by-laws

MENERAL REMARKS.
We are glad to note some signs of I
provoment in business, as is Indicated In
tbe Increase of sates In leading articles In
our reports of to-day, Tbe general feeling
in noances is better, and stronger, and al
though money continues scared the confi
dence of merchants gencrslly In the final
outcome from tbe financial muddle and an
ear. resumption of currency and active
traoo, grows stronger every day.
Prices on all loading articles are well
sustained. Corn, oats and meal are high
er. Flour is a little dull and weak but
Ibis is believed to be only temporary.
Correspondents will probably notice an
apparently large margin between our quo
tations and those froia New Orloans. In
order that they may understand this, we
beg leave to Inform them that our mer
chants are obliged to pay In New Orleans
C and i per cent, premium for currency,
and r, pr cent, for exchange. "We hope
this state ol things wil not long continue.
A lew bales of cotton have been receiv
ed and sold within a day or two, here, and
it Is predicted that tho day Is not far dis
tant when Caiio will claim this staple as
one of the leading articles In hor market.
Till MARKET.
."Correspondents should bear In mind
that the prices hero given aro for round
lots. For broken and small lots and in
flUIng orders higher prices must be
paid.
FLOUR The market is very quiet but

CORN There is a good local demand
for whlto for milling purposes which pres
ent receipts are In adquate lo meet. The
shipping demand for tbe southern market
is very small owing to tbe scarcity of cur
rency in New Orleans. Speculators will
not risk sales nn crsdit and there is no
cash to speak of. The price cf corn in
that market would warrant an advance
of 2 to 4 cents here if it were nnt for tho
risk to be taken in making shipments and
the high price of exchange and currency.
we note sales or a cars white in bulk on
track 48c; 3 cars yellow in sacks del. 53c,
ana 10 cars mixed in sacks del. 60c.

ket Is exhausted and receipts are very
light. Prices aro firm at tbe advance
quoted. Sales, 1 car steam dried del.
$2 75, and 300 bbls steam dried del $2 75.
iiriAine market is very quief IU
celpts are small but they are fully equal to
the demand, Prices are quoted $13 per
ton sackod and del.
BUTTER Choice butter is scarce and
