Wlien Mr. MSIIanl l'llmoru died lliu
otliur day, inot of tlio notices of which
liiri death ovcnriionnd monlioricd thu
faot that his early education was neg
lected, nnd that at the (irno when ho
began tho ntudy of the law, at the nge
of nineteen, lio had never frccn n gram
mar or geography. Yet Mr. Killinoro,
both in writing nnd Fppccli, uud the
Kugli.xh luugiiago with about thu tiMial
jiropriet y ; nnd, like most ot our ro.ec
tnblo aiblic men, he never lapsed into
any very glaring Holeo'iMiis. Of his go
ograjihy wo are not no ccrtiiin, but his
knowledge was probably Miflicicnt tor
all ordinary ciiiergciicic?. It is tho
oceuracy with which en many of our
half-educated or hclf-educated men
write and speak Knglifdi which is Mir
prising ; and there is nothing like it,
wo suspect, anywhere el.io iu the world.
Yet this facility docs not coino from
tho study of grammar. There arc not
ten men in tho House of .Representa
tives who could riar.io ten lines of -Mil
ton according to the rulci of Jiindlcy
Murray ; yet theso L'critlemcn are nev-
er guilty of two negatives employed to
strengthen the negation, even when
they are denying charges of fraud or
corruption. These arc facts which may
well lead us to revise our notions of
the necessity of fctudying grammar as
it is usually taught in our schools.
Our American accuracy docs not come
of early drilling. It is to lie nttribu-
ted to tiic general habit of rending. It
is in this way that the majority become
tolerable grammarians by rote, and
speak correctly simply became they
speak at hII. The verbs are made to
agree with their nominative case in
stinctively and as a matter of good
breeding. Small mistakes arc made, as
they arc by the best writers; but no
body notice them except professional
teachers, who, in their turn, make just
as many. Now Vork Tribune.
According to the latest complication,
17'!, there are 7,(iH newspapers iu
the I'nited Sums, and of these !J00 are
iu Iowa, which ranks sixth iu tho list
of States, New York, Pennsylvania,
Illinois, Ohio and Missouri taking pre
cedence iu tho order named; Missouri
publishing ton paper more than Iowa.
Twenty five years at;o there was not a
paper in the State.
A speaker at n temperance meeting
in Quincy, the other dav, spoke of the
"ladies' movement" as "meandering."
lie doubtless referred to (heir ticrsuit
of the Quincy topers, which makes the
expression not only perfectly proper
but decidedly graphic.
