Most t coplo who read the ncwstiapcrs
have heard xomcwhat of tho crcat chau-
ecllur'H dauchter. Tho young lady,
tliouch net beautiful, ia niiuablo, oe
coniiliahed and accustomed to tho horn
ao of tho high nooicty in which nho
moves. With her futhcr nho has been
a ;re.it f.ivorite ever pinco hho rcwup.
W hen in lierlm he has been wont to
upend with her whatever leisure mo
menta ho could snatch lrom ins labori
ous occupation", and in the country his
idlo hours have been usually pawed in
her njcicty. The tiriueo observed with
concern that his daughter rcpellod nil
proposals ol marriage mailo to her.
J hough wooed by tho most eligible
suitors, a mo nt; them tho heirs of tho
richest families members ol the most
ancient nobility, gentlemen filling the
Ingjicst olliciul positions, even a prince,
the young lady declined them nil. Af
ter brooding for u long time over the
posnible reasons of his daughter's con
duet, tho chancellor, believing that ho
had fathomed tho secret of her severity,
openod his heart to her on the hubject.
J lo told nor that ho lelt suro that the
mu.st have become profoundly nttuched
to come portion inferior to herself in
io?ition ami wealth, lie then begged
icr to mention tho name of the man to
whom she had given her heart, as he,
her father, was rich enough and power
ful enough to change the conditions
which might eccm to render her lover
an ineligible match. With flowing
tears tho young lady confessed that she
did cherish such an affection as her
futhcr suf-pceted, an affection that was
returned, but that her lover was a nini
plo lieutenant in tho nrmy. Tho licit
day the lieutuiiant appeared in the pres
ence ol the chancellor. J ho chancel-
or hardly gave him time to speak be
fore saying, "I know why it seems im-
po:siblo to you to become my son-in-law:
notwithhtanding the difference of
social position your wish shall be grat-1
lied, i hough I do not know you, the
love of my daughter is to mo sufficient
guarautec of your worth." Hut in
stead of the joyful thanks which the
prince naturally expected, lie received
a reply of the following tenor: "1
thank you for the infinite goodness, but
this union is impossible. 1 cannot take
tome us my wile the daughter ol Inm
whom my family regard as an enemy
of the church, whom I myself am al
most compelled to look upon as such."
The officer then sadly took hh depart
ure, leaving the chancellor utterly con
founded, who had little anticipated such
a reception of his condcccusion.
Having summoned his daughter, the
chancellor told her that the officer
wholly refused her hand, and that she
must lorgct mm. I he daughter, be
coming paler than ever, replied, "He
is too honorable to deny his religious
faith. 1 will not usk of him such a sac
rifice, and if he desiro it, 1, less believ
ing than he, will adopt his religion to
render our marriage possible." Tho
father saw his child become more in
consolable from day to day, and at
length ho was thrown mto a stato ol
fearful excitement which was not with
out consequences. So things stand at
prcFcnt. llow they will cud no one
can foresee. As already remarked, if
this story is true it is fairly interest
ing. Wc now add that if it is false, it
is still not without interest as an illuB-
