article chnrKlDB llulnc with a f(H,WX) fraud
was slrcttlated through the columns of tbo
Btntincl. The government henchmen met
on'theitrect-corncm and mulled audibly,
Kbaklng handi acrosn the bloody vhaniii and
congratulatlug ibemwiyes that the pro-
nrm tan iur ruiiina; aiuuiuvr vmuih-

JIortonM path, out of the way by a rigid
examination. The poit-ofllce cll'ju upec-
lilly tliowcd tbe rejoicing In tfaolr lacev
and It wa of a kind that teemed to ay:
"it works 2 we expected." The fact
turned out :o be, as developed later In the
day, that the damaging dlnclosurct against
Iilalni; had been kept under lock and key
la the Morton aracnalfor months, and that
hii henchmtn were quietly waiting their
time to rprlng tbe indictment against the
ompctltor. Alio.it seems that a (lorern
mtnt caucus on thit rery matter was held
In the potUillirc building several weeks
ago at whl'h the ijurstlon wai llcueil at
treat length, and the time ret lor opening
batteries for May 1. The revelations made
ye.'terday by the Sentinel were somewhat
rinaturo la the eyes ol the ring, but that
llltle disturbance wss soon forgotten. The
bill had been started, and In uch n tbape
that It would havs to roll till It reached the
cspltol, and started a Congrclonal Inves
tigation o' the ex.speaker. The ueit!on
all hangs on the accuracy ot tbe charge"
and the poMlhtllty of proving them beyond
a doubt. In order to find out how this
mutter stood, a Sentinel reporter called
upon Mr. John C. S. Harrison, the gentle
man who had command of the facts, and
had kept them so sacrudly for four years,
till they would bo of benefit to Senator
Morton. Mr. Harrison was found In hi
element, another word for his tank, a
smile of grim satisfaction on bis fare, and a
fragrant weed In bis mouth. lie seemad to
take thing easily when the Mlbject was
broached and showed a disposition to ac-
ccpt the position to which he barf-Usn
driven.
"Mr. IIainon," said the reporter, "you
have no doubt been bored to death to-day
by Intenlewefs about this buslneV'
"Wo, no," he replied. "1 have simply
refused one and all of them any extended
statement about the mattei, for I think it
the best policy on my part to hold tire till
llieriiui'Uitc Mia for my testimony. II
they order me to speak, I am ready, and
"halfccrtalnly tell all I know."
"Well, Mr, the charges madeamjtitt now
of national Interest and importance, ami the
people would be glad to know that In gen.
cral, if not In alt-tall, on HihMantlato
them."
'I don't want any newspaper notoriety,"
be blandly replied.
"Hut about tho datri glen-niiin any
change he made In thcmV
"No," heVjulckly answered; and then
teeing he had, perhaps, committee himieir
he said, "it was a llrst-clas guess."
. "You have been one of the (loyernment
directors of the road for some time. Mr.
;JIarrlfoa"
yYe, for six years."
"How inany are there V
''FUe'f ami three then serving arc still on
the board ; Mr. Wllob, ol Iowa, Mr. Mal
lard and myself."
"It wa not Mr. Wilson that urged you to
withdraw that resolution about tbe
money i'
"Oh, no, no, It was Holllna, the secretary,"
and then ho remarked, conttdonllally: "He
came tome and said it would never do to
press that Investigation. Kasy enough to
show tint when tbe time comes, though,
I'd rather not go Into details at present."
"Well, Illalne certainly must have had
some eonncctlou with the l'aclllo road in
some legal capacity Y"
"Xotabit of it. He never was em
ployed that I know of, and 1 would have
some knowledge of It if ho had been. Ho
was speaker ol the House at that time
1372."
Ol course you know nothing of his sc
vices to the roatU"
"I can't say that I do, hut I feel con
vlnced tbe money went Into his pockets."
Several frantic efforts were made to In
duce the gentleman to go Into some details,
but without effect. He blandly declined
the honor of placing hlinscir on record
any whero but before the committee. He
felt that Itolllns would not dare to repudi
ate his story shout tho resolution. He
stated that thlt matter bad been known In
some circles far many months. As for him
self, bo has been confessedly in charge, of
an administration ol fraud for four years,
and yet has held his tongue. This fact will
be counted. against him by all lovers of
honesty hi the administration of great
frusts, hut when tho sil'aira was llrst known
the relations between Morton and Illaluo
were decidedly dlil'crent, and tbo time has
at length arrived for Mr. Harrison's con
science to come to tho surface.
Plant Potatoos Early.
The experience of farmers everywhere
Is, that tho best rrops of potatoes am pro
duced by planting early, oral soon as I ho
land cau be got In good condition. Jt Is
had policy to plow land when wet; and
When tho season Is fold and rainy, it Is bel
ter to wait for good wether to put In any
crop; but p'aut your potatoes as soon as
you can safely. An excellent way to man
age, M) as to have but little work In culti
vating tho crop, is to plant cither in drills
or hlllls, and cover the seed with ii plow,
forming a ridge ovor each row; and when
thepotatoehavo been nfh jround front
tirtsen to fwenty days they will have grown
up several Indies In (he ground. Thin
take a barrow, (urn It ocr with tbe leeib
up, put upon It a large Jslono or two In
front, lengthen your trace chains as tnurh
as you can, and go over the ground ajro
the rldgc, till the land Is perfectly smooth.
If some of tbe potato prouts sre uncovered
no harm will ho done, The weeds will all
bo destroyed, and your potatoes will come
HP and grow rapidly, and generally will
require on other cultivation, but with a
horse boo or cultivstor, tl'lng a mould
board cultivator, or a plow, to turn up the
earth a few Inchoa hlgn around the vines to
finish up the cultivation for tho season,
