able from any cause, whether Just or

trict, we should premime lie would
t hoo to resign his candidacy in favor of
some man who could. Principle, self
rcspett and good taste would all seem to
combine to imiel him to such a tr-p.
We nieak now earnestly as a friend and
supporter of Col. Town., a one who
will continue to support him from nat
ural fealty to party in cae lie remains a
candidate, though knowing that every
effort lu that direction will be fruitless,
lie certainly cannot deceive himselt or
anybody el.-e into the belief that his elec
tion is poasible. He knows lull well
that the prominent men and newspapers
ol his parly in .l.ii-kson. I'liion and Alex
ander counties that oppose him repre
sent a large share ot the party It not a
majority. If the full torce ot this tact
has not readied his mind. Judge Craw
ford and ins other inlliiential 1'nion
county friends who labored hard for his
nomination and vouched for him extrav
agantly, should .ee that it docs and pre
vail on him to withdraw.
We appreher.d that Judge Hileman
would readily consent to withdraw from
his dubious if not discreditable position in
such an even'., and that the district com
mittee would then nominate a nam not
identified with the late dissensions and
generally acceptable to the party, a man
like Hon. Jcsets W are. the present sena
tor. There are probably others who
could be as easily elected, though no one
occurs to lis who probably would give
strength to the party and ticket to the
same extent lie would. His record i

ion il the general assembly than any
oilier i-enator of either party, got more
bills enacted into law, the largest portion
ot which, though necessarily general in
their apparent character, were designed
lor the benctil of his constituents partic
ularly, and were mostly introduced in
answer to petitions from them.
I5ut we are no stickler for the re-election
of Mr. Ware, though believing a compro
mise could Ik more easily ctlected on
lit in thau on anybody else, that lie would
strengthen the ticket quite as much as
any other man coiiid, and that no man
could represent and serve the interests of
the district better thau lie. Any good
ruin acceptable to the party geneisl'y
will do. The nnin point Is to elect a
Democrat. Col. Townes suit us, but
wo see clearly lie cannot be elected, and
ehal! view it as an everlasting shame if
at this crisis, the most important likely
to occur in the history of the party in
this senatorial district for many years to
come, the State Senator is needlessly
thrown Into the hands ol the Republican-.
We are deceived in the character
of Col. Townes if he is not equal to th
emergency, and docs not win respect and
honor from his opponents as well as
friends by exhibiting the magnamity ne
cessary to insure his party success in this
district at this iuiDortant period.
