Htuiili'l patience waa at last exhausted,
and he deterininil upon vl((orau inei4

Hi" lirtexieriineiit was to place a larjje
firing rat-trnp, arti-tlt ully concealed in
heap of shelled corn, close by the cat
hole in the corn crib door, expecting that
the unwary thief, plunging hi hand
rccklcfckly through tho hole into the
heap, would lie caught and held till Borne
one catne to et liitn Iree, liutlo! next
morning the trap was found Fprung and
the leap of corn dimini.-hed, but ttic

l lt a jjood-Mzeil look arrived from
New i ork, and the next day the. local
crK.'titer wfti ordered to hx two bras

alongside the door lor convenience, ai
Mr. Smith publicly explained, of ftendy
Injj oue'ii self while turning the other.
i he second handle had a latch att.n lied to
it by which the door was secured on the
inside, and waa set iu su li a position that
any one turning it must hold on by the
other knob to prevent being thrown bai k-
ward by the opening door. Both handles
were protusely di-coratcd with glaM, aud
elicited much admiration trouithc hands,
who submitted them to n critical exami
nation. The cariientcr'a work blng

eced, was that alterooou deposited in the
crib, and during the early part ol the
ensuing night the proprietor of Hellevue
secretly busied himself w itb a coil of in

Numerous and diverge were the "pecu

Irom headquarter, l'repared w ith half

Mr. Smith, nnd boldly propounded his
questions.

"Well, Uncle Zeke, 1 can't very well
explain it to you ; but J just advise you
don't go near thut crib alter dark, or
you may sec something you won't like,"
Aud Uncle Zeke departed, revolving
many things iu his mind.
It was uiiduight the hour when
chareh yard9 arc said to yawn, not with
exhaustion, but returning animation.
In front ol the enchanted com house
stood Brother K.ckial, a lengthy pole in
his hand, and a capacious meal bag over
his shoulder. In silent meditation he
stiod for some live minutes, delibera
ting ou the best plan of attack, 'i he
great Newfoundland watch dog bounded
toward him, evideutly iu rejoicing wcl
come. Forth f rom his pocket the old
man drew a savory bit ol fried bacon
which tho faithless Uos'eu eagerly do
voured. The reflection ended, tho dog
lay contentedly on the ground, and
watched the subsequent proceeding with
the air of a totally disinterested ob
server. "Clar to goodness, now," muttered
Ueck Zeke, "wish't 1 uu'sUtoU 'bout dl

Uncle Zeke paused, scratched his bead
meditatively, nnd then resumed his si -iloqtiy
:
"Will, I detclar,' cf disser Uon' beat

fiMVhness. Anyway, Us gwinefortry
him."
Uncle Zeke threw bis ting to the
ground, vtepied to one side of the house,
aud with Ids jkiIi! struck a sharp Mow
on the brass knob nearest him. Nothing
followed. He pried against it with his
sink, but still without cuect. lie went
t tho other side of the house nnd re-
lieated his cxiK-rimeiits on the fieetiiid
knob, but still all remained quiet.
Unci.,-Zeke now drew from his pocket
a skeleton key, mounted the ladder, and
and in a trice had opened the padlock
which held the door.
"Iar now, jus' 'a I fought, De bo."
done humhii" dem fool nigger make uin

The old darkey reached up nnd cau
tiously turned the handle. The door
opened a little, and, casting away all
fear. Uncle Zeke boldly reached lor the
other knob, tfl steady himel! while be
swung back the door.
Literally like a flash of lightning the
electric discharge passed through him.
The muscles ot his fingers contracted,
aud he could not release his bold of the
enchanted handle. At J aft his feet slip
ped from the ladder, aud the weight of
lis body tore bit bauds adrift. Like a
og the old man droped to the ground.
and lay groaning, praying, and generally
bewildered.
"Oh, de lawsgoramity! Oh, my heab-

Uncle Zeke neber touch iiuflin no mo'.
Clar to goodness I s a change' man Torn
disday. 11 r-r-r-r-r " Aud w hat with
the shock, the fright, and the fall, Uncle
Zeke's senses seemed leaving him.
"Ezekiel !" said a solemn voice. In
stinctively Uncle Zeke answered, "Here
me," and looked in the direction ot the
sound. Oh, horror! A figure clad In
w bite was Hearing him with slow and
solemn steps. As the mysterious visitor
approached, it seemed to rise until it
towered to the height ot at least ten feet.
The wretched Ezekiel, on bis hands aud
knees, his eyes protruding, and his jaw
dropped, remained uis if paralyzed.
Suddenly the pbuitom bowed itself,
and its head descending with incredible
sw iftness, mn.le the unfortunate Uncle
Zeke senseless to the earth.
J'hrec days later, as poor Uncle Zek-
lay, racked with rheumatism and tor
mented with spiritual tear, upon his bed
in the single room at his cabin, the door
opened, and in walked Mr. Smith of
Bellevue.
'uoou morning Uucle Zeke. Why,
what's the matter w ith you, old man?''
"Oh, Mis' Smith! oh, Mis' Smith, 1
done had some terrible siterences lately.

"No, indwd, Uncle Zeke; nobody
been near it. Every thing all right
now."
"An' nobody done touch de lock?
Do' lock' ebery inorninT'
"Yes, inditd. Why, who do you
think would touch it, old man ?"
Uncle Zeke answered not, but his lips
moved convulsively, as he muttered,
"Knock me down fus, an' den lock de
do' an' took de key. Now I knows it
was de angel ob de Lord."'!'. L.
