saiU Mr. Flint,' 'Jist let's lor.katit.'
Mr. Slick, willing la oblige, yielded to
these entreaties, 'and soon produced the
clock a gaudy, highly varnished,
trumpery looking afluir. He placed It on
the chitnney.plec, wliere its beauties
were pointed out, and duly appreciated
Ly Mrs. 'Flint, whose admiration was
about euding iu a propu-al,
when Mr. Flint returned from giv
ing his directions about the care ol the
lior.es. The deacon praised the clock ;
he, too, thought it a haudsoma one; but
the deacon w as a prudent man; he had a
watch, he w as sorry, but he liad no oc
casion lor a clock. 'I gness you're in the
wrong furrow this lime, deacon ; it ain't
lor sale,' said Mr. Slick; 'and if it was, 1
reckon neighbor Steel's w lie would have

Mrs. Flint auid that Mr. Sleeie had
enough to do, poor man. to pay his in
terest, without buying clocks tor his wile.
'It's no con-arn ol mine,' said Mr. Slick,
as long as he pays tne, what he has to
do; but 1 gueas 1 don't want to cell It;
and, Uldes, it comes loo high; that
clock can't ue made at I'.hoJe Islund un
der lortv dollars. Why, it ain't
possible !' said the Clock
maker, in apparent surprise, looking at
his watch ; 'why. as I'm alive, it Is tour
o'clock, and if 1 haven't been two hours
here how on airth shall I reach liiver
Philip to-night I'll tell you what,
Mrs. Flint: I'll leave the clock in your
care till I return oa my way to the states
I'll set It agoing, afid put it to the right
time.' As soon as this operation was
performed, he delivered the key to the
deacon with a sort of serio-comic injunc
tion to wind np the clock every Saturday
night, which Mrs. Flint fuid slio would
take care should be done, and promised
to remind her husband of it, iu case he
should chance to lorget it.
"That," said the Clockihaker. as soon
as we were mounted, "that I call Ai.m
loiturr.' Now, that clock Is sold for
forty dollars it coit me lust six dollars
and fifty cents. Mrs. Flint will never
let Mrs. Steel have the refusal nor will
the deacon learn until 1 call for the clock,
that having once indulged in the use of
a supertluety, it Is difficult to give it up.
We can do without any article of lux
ury we have never had, but w ben once
obtained, it ia not in human natur to sur
render it voluntarily. Ol fifteen thous
and sold by my sell and partners iu this
proviuce, twelve thousand were left in
this manner, and only ten clocks w ere
ever returned when we called for them,
Ihev Invariably bought them. We trust
to solt sawder to get them into the
house, and to human natur that they
never come out ol it."
