w hich women can earn money either in
volve the complete breaking up ot home
as-ocUtione, or have much in them that
is UiMu?telul to a line feminine inctiii.'t,
Hnd thus, w hen a position like that ot a
copyist ia vacant, the number ot appli
cants Is surprisingly large.
1 here can be no question that an en
largement ot this class of occupations Is
a business readjustment greatly to be
dekired ; but if it Is ever brought about,
it will have to be by a certain amount .
special training on'the part oi the wo
men themselves. It require! something
tnore than the mere abiity to write a
plain hand to become even a good copy
ist. The person o employed should
write rnpidly at well a distinctly, and
besides this, Apel) words and punctuate
sentences with a tolerable amount oi
acuracy. All this is in most cases i-pte-tally
acquired tkill, and only gained
alter months of hard labor, yet ot
lie mx hundred w ho replied to the no
tice we have given above, probably not
more than a dozen had ever submitted to
till reeded training. We are willing to
hope that in the mo-t caes th does not
aritie lrom idleness or indiflerence, but
Iroin the want of some directing torce,
and on this account we are de'irous ot
ugget-ting one or two methods of en
larging the (iplierc of woman's useful
ness, which can be followed out and er
l etc 1 by home study with but little, if
any, preparatory instruction.
The first ol lhee is the kLOwledge of
practical telegraphy; that is, as lar as a
prelect eye and ear'acquaintauce with the
ior.e alphabet is concerned, and the
ability to receive and send messages on
an ordinary inHrumeiit. The labor ol
acquiring a knowledge ol the Morse
alphabet is by no means as ditllculc aa
many suppose it to be. The length and
dlvi.ion ot the sounds representing the
various letters can bestudkdand learned
with a knife and a plate as a medium a
readily as they could on a regular in
strument, while ix months' careful
attention cliould give to any one with
average intelligence the practice neces
sary to read message by the ear at as
rapid a rate as they are
usually transmitted. The very
little additional knowledge required
tor receiving and sending messages
w ould have to be gained at some otlice
or commercial school. Of course, the
noses -ion ot this amount of practical
knowledge does not insure one a posi
tion, but it is certain that the u?e ot the
telegraph is constantly on the increase,
and that in all but the main city offices
the companies are tindln'r it to their ad-
advantuge to employ female rather than
male assistants. Indeed, the work seems
to be one for which women are specially
adanted. as it has none ot the objection
able features wbi h attach to many of
the cmplovments which demand bodily
or semi-be dily exertion. There is little
reason lor thinking that the telephone
will do away with the general use of the
.Horse alphabet; out even hiouiu una
prov to be the case, another art would
come into requisition which is also em
inentlv adapted to bo a mode ol female
employment, that is. phonography It is
singular that so few women have made a
study of tliis subject ; It Is not only
an a'dvantase in itself, but is aNo a
medium oi expediting business that
is erowinsr everv day into more and
more demand. In many id the leading
mercantile houses in this city the entire
correspondence is curried on by dicta
lion, and others would willingly follow
this example If it were not for the tact
that the supply ot shortdiand writers is
L'reatlv restricted. IVrlectlon in this
line can only be reached alter two or
three years ol clos' study, nut alter tne
first few months the progress Is so ap
narent and certain as to be au encourage
ment in Itself. As in telegraphy, the
study can be carried on with little
expense or trotiDie.
