The Wheat Crop of Michigan. .-,
The Detroit 'l'ost' of March 29 prints re
ports from all parts of Michigan in regard
to the present condition and prospect of
the wheat crop and tbe estimate of the
amount of wheat In farmers hands which
can be relied upon to. supply the wants of
the market until another harvest, says: "A
more satisfactory showing for tbe interests
both of producers and tho trade generally
could not be asked or expected,' The
present prospects for Michigan wheat were
probably never equaled in any former year
at this date, the winter has been eminent
ly a favorable one for the crop; it could dot
hays been mora so had a mantle ol snow
fallen on December 1 and remained until
now. The season has been mild and pro
pitious. The tail growth was a good one,
and the winter has hardly Interrupted It;
iu fact, the plant, as rule, to-day has a
better root and a stronger stock than on
December 7. The eold weather of tbe past
week bas been rather favorable than other
wise (or the crop, iu tbat it tends to retard
undue forwardness, for a quick and grow-
In j,' spring might promote the maturing of
straw at the expense of tho berry, and
give u, Alter all, a'p'ior an ordinary
harvest. To-day, however, the promise of
the largest wheat harvest ever gathered in
.Michigan could not be improved. As to
the quantity of wheat still in farmers'
hand there can be no doubt but It exceeds
that of any former year at this date. Thirty-six
correspondents, after careful inquiry
among the best informed, estimate tbe
amount of the crop of 1878-7, yet unsold,
at from 25 to 40 per cent., and in eleven
other localities it is placed at 50 per cent,
er over. Some of the views may be txsg-
perated, Vt il only a quarter of tht im
mense yield of lat season is still available
for the wants ot tbe market, it is a much
larger amount thin was ever before held
at thU season of the year. We congratu
late tbe people of Michigan in the ptesent
