The Anniversary of the Declaration of our National Independence, is near at hand, and as yet we have not heard of any preparations being made by our citizens for its observance. Other places are moving in the matter, and why cannot the citizens of Dowagiac unite in celebrating the day with becomeing festivities ? It is an occasion that demands other tribute at our hands, than fire crackers and squibs. Let us turn aside from our usual occupations, and commemo rate the event with a spirit that shall evince that we are not unmindful of the many political, and ,ocial blessings we enjoy. Detecting Photographic Coux .TEitrEiTS. A reliable means of detecting photo graphic counterfeit bank notes and the most of .the counterfeit notes in circulation are photographs .is the application of cyanide of potassium, which . may be purchased at a trifling cost of any druggist, and can be kept in a small wide-mouthed bottle. I f bill is suspected, wet slightly any printed portion of it, and touch it with a piece of cyanide. If it hould b a photograph the paper will turn white, ;and, in fact, the surface of the whole note can be made white by this process. If the note is not photographed, this operation has no effect. How to Make a Pleasant Summer Prim. Two gallons of ginger beer may be made -as follows : Put two gallons of cold water into a jpot, npon the fire ; add to it two oz. of good ginger, And two pounds of white or brown sugar. Let it iboil, and continue boiling lor half an hour. Then .skim the liquor, and pour into ajar or tub, along ;"ith one sliced lemon and half an onnce of cream ( tartar. When nearly cold, put in a teaenpful of yeast to eause the liquor to work. The beer is now made; and after it has worked for two days, strain add bottle for use. Tie the corks down irmly.
